A patient support system including a frame having first and second portions, at least one of them movable with respect to the other to transition the frame between a first configuration and a second configuration. A first port is coupled to the first portion of the frame, and a second port disposed with the second portion of the frame, such that a distance between the first port and the second port changes when the frame transitions between the first and second configurations. A fluid conduit is arranged between the first port and the second port and configured to transition between a first length and a second length, longer than the first length, when the frame is transitioned between the first and second configurations. The fluid conduit is configured with a resiliency to naturally return toward the first length. A method of using a patient support system is also included.

Methods and apparatuses for low-air-loss (LAL) coverlets and airflow units for coverlets

A bariatric treatment system providing a comprehensive array of therapeutic services for the morbidly obese patient is disclosed. The treatment system generally comprises a stable bed frame upon which is mounted a low air loss therapeutic mattress system. Integrated hardware and software controls provide such therapies as pulsation, percussion, rotation, cardiac chair and Trendelenburg. Means are disclosed whereby the bariatric patient may safely and comfortably enter and exit the bed with relative ease. The bed is adaptable for transport within a hospital, including such features as a TRANSPORT MODE wherein the bed's lateral axis is minimized and battery backup to maintain necessary therapies during patient transport. A plurality of control means are disclosed for simplification of caregiver workload and ease of patient utilization.

Bariatric treatment system and related methods

A high-load, high-performance, twin-wheeled central-braking caster for a bed is provided having two wheels each comprised of an aluminum core disc and an annular cylindrical flange. The inside of the flanges are covered with elastomeric material in order to serve as brake drums for the wheels. The caster has a central braking mechanism comprising a spring-loaded double-armed brake lever mounted on a pivot pin to guide the brake lever so that it pivots exclusively about a horizontal axis perpendicular to the direction of the wheels' forward rolling movement. The central braking mechanism further comprises a pivot block with an aperture for receiving the pivot pin for mounting the brake lever. The braking mechanism further comprises two compression springs having sufficient spring force to bias the double-armed brake lever away from the wheel. Recesses are provided in the pivot block for anchoring an end of each of the compression springs, the opposite ends of the compression springs being disposed to provide a pushing force against a saddle portion of the double-armed brake lever in order to bias the brake arm away from the brake drum. Flattened teeth are provided on each arm of the brake lever to grab the elastomeric material on the inside surface of the corresponding wheel's annular flange in order to inhibit wheel rotation.

High load bearing central-braking caster

An inflatable mattress made of multiple, integrally joined cushions designed to reduce patient interface pressures, which may be used separately or as an overlay on a standard hospital bed. Each cushion and section of the mattress is formed by joining upper and lower sheets, both to form the edges of the cushions and sections and to provide a relatively flat support surface which is laterally bounded by inflatable ridges which help keep the patient from rolling or sliding off either side of the mattress. The upper and lower sheets to form the mattress are made from a water vapor permeable but waterproof material, certain sections of the upper surface of the cushions being formed of air-permeable material which serves to allow air to escape in the area where a patient lies to provide comfort and therapy for the patient. A blower for the mattress provides compressed air at separately adjustable flow rates through three separate conduits and also include a heating element for warming the air to enhance the therapeutic benefits of the mattress.

A low air loss mattress 20 made of multiple cushions 21, 22 and 23 which are connected together and which form an integral mattress which may be used on a standard hospital bed. Each section 21, 22, and 23 is formed by sewing together upper and lower sheets 27 and 28, 29 and 30, and 31 and 32, which sheets are also connected by multiple retaining means 50 which act as air vent means to allow air to escape in the area where a patient lies to provide comfort to the patient and to allow pressure regulation in each of the cushions.
