A communications system includes a packet-based wireless network linked to mobile units and a circuit-switched network such as a public-switched telephone network (PSTN). A primary Packet Data Protocol (PDP) context is established with call setup that contains the default quality of service (QoS) profile of the call session. However, to support multiple flows with different QoS profiles, secondary PDP contexts with different QoS profiles may be activated in the call session. The secondary PDP context activation may be performed using messaging according to a protocol for reserving resources, such as the Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP).

Establishing a communications session having a quality of service in a communications system

The present invention supports a filtered router flag value in an information packet for packet-based communication networks. The presence of the filtered router flag value identifies the information packet as possibly requiring a slow-path routing technique. The flag value could also identify the router type or conditions that actually require slow-path routing techniques. A router identifying the filtered router flag value will forward the information packet to the signal processor for slow-path processing. A router not finding the filtered router flag value will forward the information packet directly on the appropriate output for transmission onto the network.

Filtered router alert hop-by-hop option

Location update messages for a mobile node can be made interceptible by routers which form tunnels for communication with the mobile node. A correspondent agent intercepts a Binding Update with a Router Alert and binds the address of the mobile node with a care of address for the mobile node provided in the Binding Update. The correspondent agent will thereafter intercept messages from its correspondent host destined for the mobile node and redirect them to the care of address thereby bypassing the home agent of the mobile node. A border router intercepts a Registration Request with Router Alert and binds the address of the mobile node with a care of address for the mobile node. If a binding existed previously, then the border router terminates the Request. Otherwise, the Request is forwarded to the home agent of the mobile node after substituting its own address for the care of address.

Method and program code for communicating with a mobile node through tunnels

Because consuming extensive processor resources to directly compress textual messages for transmission in a data communication network is viewed as undesirable, a method of message compression in accordance with the present invention applies simple tokenization to certain fields in a message and then combines at least two of the tokens to produce a compact tokenized message that is up to 30% smaller than the original message. Thereafter, the tokenized message can optionally be compressed further utilizing a standard compression algorithm, such as Lempel-Ziv 1977 (LZ77), to attain a substantial compression ratio. Applying a standard compression scheme, such as LZ77, after tokenization is not as processor-intensive as direct compression of the original message and can decrease the message size by an additional 10%.

The architecture also includes an access interface layer associated with the access management layer. The access interface layer can include: a channel management server; a policy enforcement server; an administration and maintenance server; and a radio frequency server.

Architecture for an IP centric distributed network

An integrated voice and packet data telecommunications system has at least one dual mode channel. The system comprises a plurality of transceivers, at least one transceiver being operable to transmit and receive voice traffic on the dual mode channel, and at least one transceiver being operable to transmit and receive packet data traffic on the dual mode channel. The system further comprises a controller for controlling the transceivers so as to allocate the dual mode channel either to voice communications or to packet data communications. The controller responds to changing demand for voice channels and packet data channels by changing dynamically the allocation of the dual mode channel. The system is particularly useful for providing Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) services.
