A continuous bulk polymerization and esterification process includes continuously charging into a reaction zone at least one ethylenically unsaturated acid-functional monomer and at least one linear or branched chain alkanol having greater than 11 carbon atoms. The process includes maintaining a flow rate through the reaction zone sufficient to provide an average residence time of less than 60 minutes and maintaining a temperature in the reaction zone sufficient to produce a polymeric product incorporating at least some of the alkanol as an ester of the polymerized ethylenically unsaturated acid-functional monomer. The polymeric product is used in various processes to produce water-based compositions including emulsions and dispersions such as oil emulsions, wax dispersions, pigment dispersions, surfactants and coatings which contain the polymeric product. A polymeric surfactant includes at least one ethylenically unsaturated acid-functional monomer which has been radically incorporated into the polymeric surfactant and at least one ester of the incorporated ethylenically unsaturated acid-functional monomer which has a linear or branched chain alkyl group with greater than 11 carbon atoms. The molar critical micelle concentration of the polymeric surfactant is less than 1.0&#xd7;10moles/liter. Aqueous 2 percent solutions of certain polymeric surfactants have a surface tension of less than 45 mN/m at 30&#xb0; C. and exhibit a decrease in surface tension of at least 5 mN/m as the temperature warms from 30&#xb0; C. to 50&#xb0; C.

This invention relates to polymer blends comprising a polycarboxypolyamide resin with an alkali dispersible resin. This invention also relates to the use of the polymer blends to prepare aqueous dispersions. The aqueous dispersions were obtained by heating polycarboxypolyamide resins with alkali dispersible resins in an aqueous medium. The invention further relates to coating compositions containing the aqueous dispersions. Such coating compositions include inks, floor finishes, overprint varnishes, sizing, paints and adhesives.

Novel polymeric compositions are disclosed. The polymeric compositions, in particular, are either soluble or readily dispersible in water. Such polymeric compositions can be characterized as polymeric blends containing at least one acid-functional vinyl polymer and at least one amino-functional siloxane polymer. The novel polymeric blends further include volatile aqueous media comprising water and base in an amount that is effective for preventing the acid-functional moieties of the vinyl polymer from chemically reacting with the amino-functional moieties of the siloxane polymer. Such compositions or 'blends', in general, comprise 60-99.9 parts-by-weight of the acid-functional vinyl polymer and 0.1-40 parts-by-weight of the amino-functional siloxane polymer, based upon total weight of the blended polymeric composition. Also disclosed are methods of producing the blended polymeric composition. The blended polymeric compositions are able to provide various substrates with surface coatings that are characterized as quasi-crosslinked, alkali-soluble polymeric networks exhibiting enhanced surface properties.

Blended polymeric compositions

An alkali-soluble coating formulation is disclosed. Such a coating formulation comprises a volatile, aqueous carrier; an alkali-soluble hydrophilic polymer, in the aqueous carrier; an alkali-soluble multivalent metal ion-containing bond-forming agent, also in the aqueous carrier; and an effective amount of a volatile alkali ingredient, in the aqueous carrier, for dissolving both the hydrophilic polymer as well as the multivalent metal ion-containing bond-forming agent. The relative amounts of hydrophilic polymer and multivalent metal ion-containing bond-forming agent, in the aqueous carrier, are effective for forming an alkali-soluble polymeric coating on a substrate, upon evaporation of the volatile, aqueous carrier therefrom.
