A method and system for correcting timing errors due to thermal changes within a portable computing device are disclosed. The system and method may include calculating an estimate of frequency for a first clock compared to a second clock. The first clock may comprise a crystal oscillator while the second clock comprises a system clock. Next, a sleep state may be calculated for a hardware device, such as radio access technology ('RAT') module, based on the estimate of frequency for the first clock. An error in the frequency of the first clock that may occur during the sleep state of the hardware device may be calculated. Subsequently, a magnitude of time that corresponds to an actual length of the sleep state relative to the second clock may be calculated so that an internal clock of the hardware devices may be synchronized with the second clock.

One aspect of the invention provides a system, apparatus and method that allow a wireless communication device to intelligently search for and select a communication cell based on a system identifier (SID) and network identifier (NID) order of preference rather than just pilot signal strength. Generally, a mobile device scans a frequency channel associated with the highest preferred SID/NID for pilot signals at different PN offsets. The cell associated with the strongest pilot signal detected is queried to determine whether it belongs to the SID/NID sought. If the selected PN offset belongs to a cell associated with the SID/NID sought then it is used for communications. Otherwise, the SID/NID identification process is repeated for the next strongest PN offset detected on the same frequency channel. If no pilot signals meeting these criteria are found in the frequency channel, the next highest preferred SID/NID is selected and the process is repeated.

Technique for using the same wireless frequency channel in overlapping or adjacent coverage areas

A Wireless Communication Device (WCD) inter-operates with a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) communication system. The WCD operates in an idle mode wherein the WCD transitions between a sleep state to conserve power and an awake state to receive one or more paging signals. The WCD attempts to reacquire a first pilot signal associated with a first paging signal that was previously being demodulated, and a second pilot signal that was previously being tracked. The WCD performs a handoff from the first paging signal to a second paging signal associated with the second pilot signal when the attempt to reacquire the first pilot signal fails and the attempt to reacquire the second pilot signal is successful.

Performing an idle mode handoff in a wireless communication device

A Wireless Communication Device (WCD) includes multiple fingers that track one or more tracked transponder beams. Each tracked beam is from a respective tracked transponder. The WCD determines a tracked-beam searcher energy for each of the tracked beams, and an untracked-beam searcher energy for each of one or more untracked beams from each of the tracked transponders. The WCD attempts to determine a preferred one of the untracked beams that should become a tracked beam. This determination is made based on the tracked-beam and the untracked-beam searcher energies. The WCD assigns, or alternatively, reassigns, a finger to the preferred untracked beam when the attempt to determine a preferred untracked beam is successful. The transponders may be satellites or base stations.

Managing searcher and tracker resources in a wireless communication device

A wireless remote unit performs SPS acquisition interleaved with receiving paging information over a wireless slotted paging channel and receiving data packets over a wireless data communication system. The remote unit tunes to a pilot channel, synchronizes to an internal clock of the wireless remote unit with a pilot signal transmitted over the pilot channel; and starts a search for SPS satellites after completing synchronization with the internal clock.
