A multi-ply composite container for consumer products is provided having a tubular body ply and a film label ply. The tubular body ply is formed of paperboard material, and the film label ply is peelably adhered to the outer surface of the tubular body ply. The film label ply is comprised of a polymeric film having inner and outer layers formed from polymeric materials. The inner layer is permanently bonded to the outer layer such that the layers provide a film label ply having predictable tear characteristics, yet having the necessary strength to prevent premature rupture of the container. An adhesive is applied on at least a portion of the inner layer of the film label ply. The adhesive is for peelably adhering the label ply to the outer surface of the tubular body ply. A plurality of perforations or a laser score may also be included for directed a tear in the film label ply. Graphical matter can be included on at least a portion of the inner or outer layer of the film label ply.

Removable film label for composite containers

A tubular container for expansible food products is provided according to the present invention that includes a flexible liner having opposed end portions secured to respective ends of a tubular body wall. The tubular body wall has opposed ends and inner and outer surfaces and comprises a wound strip of material having opposed side edges. An end closure is secured to each end of the tubular body wall and can hermetically seal the container. A vent hole may be formed through the body wall and the label by way of a laser for allowing the passage of air therethrough. The flexible liner is secured to the respective ends of the tubular body wall by way of an adhesive band between the liner and the inner surface of the tubular body wall. The flexible liner thus has a free medial portion between the end portions which moves inwardly against the expansible food product when a vacuum is applied during packaging, and which also then moves outwardly against the inner surface of the tubular body wall as the product expands. The liner preferably comprises a flexible and stretchable liner formed of at least one polymeric layer without foil and paper layers.

Composite container for vacuum packaging food products such as dough and associated methods

A method of manufacturing multi-ply tubular containers for food products is provided including the steps of applying an aqueous adhesive to a surface of a paperboard body ply and then heating the aqueous adhesive to evaporate part of the water content and render the adhesive substantially tacky. The body ply and a polymeric liner ply having a moisture barrier layer are then passed through a nip to adhere the liner ply to the body ply and are wrapped around a shaping mandrel to create the tubular container. Accordingly, an advantageous tubular container can be manufactured having a body ply formed of paperboard which is wrapped into a tubular shape to define an inner surface. The body ply defines a predetermined circumferential length before being wrapped which corresponds to one revolution of the body ply when wrapped in a tubular shape. A polymeric liner ply is adhered to the inner surface of the body ply and defines a circumferential length equal to that of the body ply prior to being wrapped. Accordingly, the liner ply is circumferentially compressed when the body ply is wrapped into the tubular shape and advantageously has a wrinkled surface finish after being wrapped which is caused by the circumferential compression of the liner ply.

Methods and apparatus for manufacturing tubular containers

Composite paperboard container constructions, providing optimized axial crush strength, and related properties, are formed of one, two, or three structural paperboard plies that are arranged to form a layered body wall having a cross-section of the construction in the ordered structure, high compression strength paperboard layer&bsol;low compression strength paperboard layer&bsol;high compression strength paperboard layer. Preferably, the container body is formed of one or two structural plies and at least one structural ply is a multiple layer paperboard having both high compression strength and low compression strength paperboard layers.

Composite paperboard containers of optimized axial strength construction

A method of manufacturing multi-ply tubular containers for food products is provided including the steps of advancing a continuous body ply formed of paperboard towards a shaping mandrel and advancing a continuous polymeric liner ply adjacent to one surface of the paperboard body ply. The polymeric liner ply includes a moisture barrier layer and an adhesive layer defining one surface of the liner ply, wherein the adhesive layer includes a polymeric adhesive which is activated at a predetermined activation temperature. The body ply is heated to a temperature above the activation temperature of the adhesive, and the body ply and the liner ply are then passed in face-to-face contact through a nip to adhere the liner ply to the body ply. The body ply and liner ply are then wrapped around a shaping mandrel to create the tubular container. Accordingly, an advantageous tubular container can be manufactured having an unsupported and polymeric liner ply which is adhered to a body ply without the application of any separate adhesives.

Methods of manufacturing tubular containers having polymeric liner plies

A container for containing a food product and an ancillary product is provided, which includes a tubular body formed of a paperboard material, at least one retaining rim formed by bending one of the ends of the tubular body radially inwardly, and a cup for holding ancillary products and separating and protecting the ancillary products from the food product. The cup has an open end which is in engagement with the retaining rim for retaining the cup within the tubular body. In this arrangement, the container is capable of withstanding internal pressure generated by packaged dough or other pressurized products without the use of expensive, opaque crimped metal ends, thereby overcoming deficiencies of conventional product and ancillary product containers. This arrangement permits the container to utilize transparent plastic ends so that consumers may observe the ancillary product packaged in the container and avoid food product discoloration frequently caused by metal ends.

A container for refrigerated dough or other expandable products and a condiment cup therein for containing icing and the like includes the following construction. The container has an elongate cylindrical body with an interior wall of a predetermined diameter and end closures. The condiment cup is of a flexible plastic generally cup-shaped construction having a generally cylindrical side wall closed at one end by a dome-shaped convex end and open at the other end. The cylindrical side wall has an outside diameter only slightly less than the diameter of the container interior wall so as to provide a loose friction fit when the condiment cup is positioned within the container cylindrical body portion. The condiment cup is filled with condiment and positioned within the container at one end of the cylindrical body portion with the open end of the cup facing the end closure at the one end. The container is filled with refrigerated dough or other expandable product, so that, as the product expands within the container, the product will push against the dome-shaped convex end of the condiment cup for flexing the cup end inwardly to cause flexing of the cup side wall outwardly to provide a tighter friction fit with the container interior wall to seal the condiments in the cup from the product in the container.
