A trusted rendering system for use in a system for controlling the distribution and use of digital works. A trusted rendering system facilitates the protection of rendered digital works which have been rendered on a system which controls the distribution and use of digital works through the use of dynamically generated watermark information that is embedded in the rendered output. The watermark data typically provides information relating to the owner of the digital work, the rights associated with the rendered copy of the digital work and when and where the digital work was rendered. This information will typically aid in deterring or preventing unauthorized copying of the rendered work to be made. The system for controlling distribution and use of digital works provides for attaching persistent usage rights to a digital work. Digital works are transferred between repositories which are used to request and grant access to digital works. Such repositories are also coupled to credit servers which provide for payment of any fees incurred as a result of accessing a digital work.

System for controlling the distribution and use of rendered digital works through watermarking

Method, apparatus, and media for embedding a watermark in digital content. An exemplary method comprises receiving digital content in an encrypted form, receiving a decryption key associated with the digital content, receiving permitted use information specifying conditions under which the digital content is permitted to be rendered and indicating that a watermark is to be embedded in a rendered copy of the digital content, determining whether the conditions are satisfied, and rendering the digital content if the conditions are satisfied based on the determining, the rendering including generating a watermark based on the permitted use information and creating a rendered copy of the digital content having the watermark embedded therein.

A user interface tag for use in processing a document is provided. A printable surface is on one side of a document and an adhesive surface is on an other side of the document. The printable surface further includes a printed data field, including machine-readable marks of digital data encoding a service and a user identity; and a printed border surrounding the printed data field to define an iconic representation. A scanned representation of the machine-readable marks is decoded from the iconic representation to specify the user identity and the service.

A user interface tag for use in processing a service on a scannable document is provided. A printable surface is on one side of the scannable document and an adhesive surface is on another side of the scannable document. The printable surface further includes a printed data field specified substantially within the printable surface, including machine-readable marks of digital data encoding a service code and a user identification number; and a printed rectilinear border surrounding the printed data field to define a rectilinear iconic representation. A scanned representation of the machine-readable marks is located by identifying the printed rectilinear border using corner candidates oriented in diametric opposition from among connected components identified on the document and the scanned representation of the machine-readable marks are decoded from the rectilinear iconic representation to specify the user identification number and the service code.

User interface tag for use in processing a service on a scannable document

A method and apparatus is disclosed for generating and distributing multilingual documents. The multilingual documents are comprised of primary information consisting of human-readable text and secondary information consisting of machine-readable data such that a translation of the text is accomplished by converting the human-readable text into a second language through the use of the decoded machine-readable data. The machine-readable data is comprised of a code that describes a set of editing operations that can be applied to the human-readable text to convert it into at least a second language. In a preferred embodiment, the machine-readable data is embedded in the image using an unobtrusive code on the document such as Xerox DATAGLYPH codes.

System and method for distributing multilingual documents

A tag-based user interface scheme for digitizing and processing hardcopy documents utilizes a sticker that includes a printed data code representative of a user identity code and a service code. When the sticker is applied to a hardcopy document and scanned, the sticker is located, the data code is parsed, and a desired service is performed based upon the information stored in the data code.

An embedded data code comprises periodic tiles having occlusions. In one embodiment, each tile is comprised of glyphs encoding a first code system. The occlusions are comprised of information, such as glyphs encoding a second code system, graphics, or text. The occlusions may occur periodically in each tile. A reading device may be used to capture an image of a portion of the substrate that includes a tile. A processor then analyzes the image to determine the tile code pattern and decode the tiled code.

Method and apparatus for implementing occlusion glyph code tilings

A mouse incorporating a camera captures an image of embedded data from a substrate under the mouse. The embedded data in the image is decoded to determine address or location information coded in the embedded data. Based on the decoded information and other user input signals, such as mouse button selection signals, the computer executes operations. The mouse also has a display controlled by the computer for providing visual feedback to a user. The display might generate an image of the substrate area under the mouse, making it appear to the user as if they are looking through the mouse directly onto the substrate. The display may also generate visual feedback regarding operations occurring in the computer, such as selection or other computer operations.

A method of developing a configuration for encoding a data glyph block such that the data capacity of the data glyph block is maximized or made optimal. The method of forming an encoded configuration for a data glyph block containing one or more occlusions includes performing one or more of cut off of one or more occlusions, enlargement of one or more occlusions and merger of two or more occlusions, and encoding the cut off, enlarged or merged occlusions with synchronization lines, and encoding any remaining occlusions by error correction, thereby forming the encoded configuration. A method of embedding a data glyph block containing occlusions into an image by halftone rendering of glyph marks, again preferably with the data glyph block having maximal or optimal data capacity, is also set forth.

Maximizing data capacity for embedded data blocks with occlusions therein

A method for permitting embedded data blocks to include intentional occlusions, for example human visible/readable information such as logos, within the embedded data block. The method encodes occlusions within data blocks such that the size and location of the occlusions are determinable for reliable decoding. The method includes determining a size and location of an occlusion comprised of one or more occluded areas within a data block, determining a regular polygon shape that encompasses only occluded areas of the occlusion, thereby separating the occlusion into occluded areas within the regular polygon shape and remainder occluded areas, if any, outside the regular polygon shape, directly encoding the regular polygon shape through the use of synchronization lines, and indirectly encoding any remainder occluded areas through error correction.
