An inductive element in the form of a shorting turn is added to the rotor of a permanent magnet synchronous motor. Changes in inductive coupling between the rotor and a stationary coil as the rotor rotates permits inductive measurements to be used to deduce rotor position information such as position velocity and acceleration.

A 'figure 8' shaped saturable reactor including a central leg, two lateral legs, an upper bar connecting the upper ends of each leg, a lower bar connecting the lower ends of each leg, and a coil wrapped around the central leg, the cross-sectional area of the central leg at its narrowest point being less than the cross-sectional areas of the two lateral legs combined so that the central leg saturates prior to the lateral legs saturating.

Saturable reactor

A bar code reader mirror oscillator is disclosed herein. The oscillator includes a permanent magnet having first and second poles of opposite polarity and an electromagnet having a core with first and second pole locations. The permanent magnet is fastened to a mirror carrier resiliently mounted to a frame to oscillate about a rotational axis, wherein the electromagnetic core is fastened to the frame so that the poles of the permanent magnet are equidistant from the pole locations of the electromagnet. This oscillator configuration directs substantially all of the energy applied to the electromagnet to the production of oscillatory motion in the associated reader mirror.

A system for measuring the torque on a shaft has two resolvers coupled to the shaft at two spaced locations. The first resolver is excited in a conventional manner. The output coils of the first resolver are connected to what are conventionally the output coils of the second resolver. What is conventionally the excitation coil of the second resolver is coupled to a demodulator which produces a signal proportional to the sine of the difference between the angular position of the shaft at the two resolver locations.

Torque measuring apparatus

A brushless resolver has first and second ring-shaped magnetic pole elements spaced from each other along a common axis. An excitation coil is wound axially between the two pole elements. First and second output coils are wound through the first and second pole elements and spaced radially from each other. A rotor is within the pole elements and has a shaft extending along the axis. First and second magnetic coupling elements are spaced along the shaft each of which being coplanar with a different one of the pole elements. Each coupling element providing 180 degrees of magnetic coupling with respect to the corresponding pole element. A high frequency signal applied to the excitations coil is transformer coupled to the output signals. The degree of coupling varies with the position of the coupling elements. The demodulated signal from each of the output coils has a triangular shaped waveform which may be directly differentiated to produce the angular velocity of the rotor shaft.

Brushless rotary position transducer

An inductor having an air gap in its magnetic core is provided with a magnetic shield which surrounds the inductor air gap to not only reverse bias the inductor magnetic circuit so as to increase the amount of current required to achieve inductor saturation but also to return any stray flux radiating from the inductor back into the inductor magnetic circuit to reduce the radiated electromagnetic interference.

An armature for electric motors having a magnetic core of stacked laminations mounted on a shaft with a plurality of electrically conductive rotor bars disposed in the magnetic core, and also having a number of arch shaped permanent magnets disposed in the core that are circularly spaced from one another and arranged concentrically with the shaft. Each permanent magnet has a pole of one magnetic polarity on its radially outer face and a pole of opposite polarity on its radially inner face, and is surrounded by magnetic core material at its circumferential ends and radially inner side to form flux return paths, whereby there are two magnetic armature poles for each permanent magnet.

A permanent magnet d-c motor is described in which the weight and cost of the armature is substantially reduced by removing some of the steel laminations. To maintain performance, the remaining laminations are spaced apart so that the axial length of the armature remains unchanged and the width of the armature winding slots are kept to a minimum to prevent magnetic saturation within the armature teeth. Two means for spacing the laminations are described.
