First and second side rods () spaced 180&#xb0; apart have distal ends () and proximal ends (), with the distal ends being attached to the clip. First and second spaced apart straps () connect the side rods intermediate the proximal ends and distal ends. An arc tube () is fixed between the first and second straps. The proximal ends diverge outwardly and engage the inner surface of a dome () to position one end of the mount. The barrel portion includes two sealed lead-in wires (). The arc tube includes an electrode () in each end (). No electrical connection is made to the frame whereby the frame is electrically isolated.

A lamp capsule may be formed with substantially parallelepipedial ends including alignments. A metal strap may surround one end, between the alignments, with first and second oppositely disposed affixation areas of extensions. A glass stem has tubular first portion with outside diameter D. A C-shaped clip is mounted upon the tubular first portion. The clip has height H and inside diameter D1 smaller than the outside diameter D. The clip frictionally engages the tubular first portion. A first frame member has a proximal terminus affixed to the clop and a second frame member has a proximal terminus affixed to the clip opposite the first frame member. The first frame member has a distal terminus affixed to the one affixation area and second frame member has a distal terminus affixed to the other affixation area. The first and second frame members and the metal strap provide the support for the capsule.

A mounting member ('&#x2033;) for an arc tube/shroud combination comprises an annulus (). The annulus () has at least one mounting tab () depending from an outer edge thereof and two spaced apart arc tube-pinch seal-engaging ribs () spanning the diameter of the annulus for frictionally engaging the pinch seals. Holding tabs () depending from the annulus mount the annulus to a shroud. In a preferred embodiment the ribs () have upstanding projections () that engage the pinch seals and provide the friction fit necessary for holding the pinch seals.

A high intensity discharge lamp has a light transmissive envelope and an arc tube located within the envelope. The arc tube contains an arc generating and sustaining medium as well as electrodes. A flare is sealed to the lamp envelope and the flare includes two electrically conductive lead-ins sealed therein, each of the lead-ins having a given diameter. A mica heat shield comprising a planar mica disc frictionally engages the lead-ins, the mica disc having a pair of lead-in receiving apertures therein, the receiving apertures having a diameter greater than the given diameter and each having an oppositely extending, radial slot extending therefrom, each of the slots having a width less than the given diameter. The mica heat shield is positioned on the lead-ins closely and adjacent to the upper surface of the flare by having the slots in frictional engagement with the lead-ins.

A metal halide arc discharge lamp includes a metal halide arc tube located within a lamp envelope, a lamp stem having first and second stem leads extending therethrough, and a frame member mechanically connected between the first stem lead and a first end portion of the arc tube. A resistor can be connected between the second stem lead and a starting electrode lead for increased mechanical support. The resistor and the frame member provide the only mechanical support for the arc tube in the lamp envelope. The dome end of the arc tube is mechanically unsupported.

A lamp base inner shell including a washer-like base having a cylindrically wall attached at a first end to an outer periphery of the base. The cylindrical wall includes a threaded portion and a plurality of cut-out portions in a second end thereof which define an equal number of tabs, each tab having an indentation extending inwardly. At least one cut-out portion extends to the inner shell base. The inner shell is used to electrically connect and secure a lamp base shell to a lamp tube. The inner shell facilitates automated production of high intensity arc discharge lamps.

A metal halide arc discharge lamp includes a sealed lamp envelope, an arc tube located within the lamp envelope, a generally cylindrical, light-transmissive shroud positioned around the arc tube, a frame comprising a single support rod extending between dome and neck regions of the lamp envelope, upper and lower clips for attaching the arc tube and the shroud to the frame, a resilient bulb spacer attached to a neck end of the frame and bearing against an inside surface of the lamp envelope for positioning the frame relative to the lamp envelope, and electrical leads for coupling electrical energy to the arc tube. The frame is mechanically supported within the lamp envelope in the neck region solely by the bulb spacer. Leakage currents between the frame and the electrical leads through the lamp stem are effectively eliminated.
