A ball grid array ceramic resonator including a substrate having one or more strips of conductive material on opposed first and second surfaces of the substrate. One or more conductive vias extend through the substrate and define termination ends in the respective substrate surfaces. In one embodiment, a plurality of conductive spheres/balls defining respective ground pads are disposed over the ends of said vias terminating in said one or more strips of conductive material on said first or second surface and another conductive sphere is disposed over one of the strips of conductive material to define an RF signal input pad.

Ball grid array resonator

An RF module adapted for direct surface mounting to the top surface of the front end of the motherboard of a wireless base station such as, for example, a femtocell. The module comprises a printed circuit board having a plurality of direct surface mounted electrical components defining respective signal transmit and receive sections for RF signals. The signal transmit section is defined by at least a power amplifier, a coupler, and a lowpass filter. The signal receive section is defined by at least a receive bandpass filter and a low-noise amplifier. A lid covers selected ones of the electrical components except for at least the power amplifier. An RF switch is located between and interconnects the respective transmit and receive sections to an antenna pin.

Time division duplex front end module

A ball grid array ceramic filter including a substrate having a ground layer of conductive material disposed over one of the surfaces thereof and a plurality of strips of conductive material on the other of the substrate surfaces defining resonators adapted to receive and pass RF signals. A plurality of vias extend through the substrate and define opposed ends terminating in the respective substrate surfaces. In one embodiment, a plurality of conductive spheres defining respective ground and RF signal input/output pads are disposed on the substrate surface with the ground layer thereon. Certain of the vias couple the resonators to the ground layer while others of the vias couple the resonators to respective spheres adapted for coupling to the respective RF signal input/output contacts on the top surface of a printed circuit board to which the filter is adapted to be direct surface mounted.

Ball grid array filter

A voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) assembly and module incorporating a ball grid array resonator as part of the tank circuit of the voltage controlled oscillator. The VCO module preferably incorporates at least an oscillator circuit, the tank circuit, and an output buffer stage circuit all defined by a plurality of interconnected electrical/electronic components including the ball grid array resonator which are mounted to a printed circuit board. In another embodiment, the oscillator assembly also includes a phase-locked loop circuit defined at least in part by an integrated circuit mounted to the printed circuit board.

Voltage controlled oscillator module with ball grid array resonator

A synthesizer module/oscillator assembly includes a voltage controlled oscillator with a coaxial resonator. In one embodiment, the module measures 20.3 mm&#xd7;14.8 mm&#xd7;3.9 mm and the coaxial resonator is positioned on the circuit board of the module between a phase locked loop integrated circuit and a main section of the voltage controlled oscillator. The phase locked loop circuit includes a loop filter and is adapted to receive the frequency signal generated by the voltage controlled oscillator and generate an adjusted frequency signal.

Coaxial resonator based voltage controlled oscillator/phased locked loop synthesizer module

A reduced-size VCO/PLL module including a circuit board having a plurality of components positioned, mounted and interconnected thereon in a manner allowing the same to fit in a 10.5 mm&#xd7;14 mm&#xd7;2.9 mm package. In one embodiment, an inner lid encloses the VCO portion of the module. In all embodiments, an outer lid is adapted to cover all of the components on the circuit board of the module. The inner and outer lids include tabs adapted to be fitted within respective apertures defined in the board. In a preferred embodiment, the VCO portion occupies one side of the module while an integrated circuit chip and a loop filter occupy an opposite side of the module.

Reduced size VCO/PLL module

A tuneable frequency translator is disclosed having electrical circuitry mounted to a circuit board. The circuitry is designed to provide a phase-locked loop with a resonator. Compliant material is positioned between the resonator and the circuit board. Operably coupled to the resonator is at least one passive device that is short-circuited by an electrically conductive lead. The resonant frequency of the frequency translator can be changed by severing the electrically conductive lead, and thus activating the associated passive device.

Tuneable frequency translator

Dual band voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs) incorporate a combiner circuit with a single output operable at two widely separated frequency bands such as 900 MHz and 1.8 GHz, for example. The combiner circuit includes a duplexer used as a combiner on the outputs of the VCOs. The duplexer can be realized in transmission line or inductor configurations. The use of the duplexer improves spurious performance and phase noise by more than 10 dB between the two operating frequency bands and supplies band rejection at the non-operating frequency.

Combiner circuit for dual band voltage controlled oscillators

A method (100) for mechanically tuning a VCO that has a resonant stripline having vias in predetermined locations connected through a circuit board to ground. This includes a step (104) of measuring the operating frequency of the VCO. A following step (106) includes calculating an amount of frequency shift needed to achieve a desired frequency. A following step (108) matches the amount of frequency shift needed to values in a look-up table of frequency shifts versus via locations to determine which vias locations will provide the proper amount of frequency shift. A last step (110) includes mechanically disconnecting from ground the via locations indicated in the third step such that the desired frequency is achieved. This method (100) of tuning allows VCO frequency adjustment after final assembly avoiding problems of frequency shifts that can occur due to the placement of a metal lid on the circuit board after assembly.

Method for mechanically tuning a voltage controlled oscillator

A method (100) for tuning a voltage controlled oscillator by changing electrical circuit parasitics includes a first step (102) of providing a voltage controlled oscillator circuit on a circuit board and a plurality of different metal lids each having different numbers, sizes and locations of holes. Each different lid presents a different electrical circuit parasitic to the voltage controlled oscillator. In a second step (104), the voltage controlled oscillator frequency is measured, and the frequency shift needed to achieve a desired operating frequency is calculated in a third step (106). In a fourth step (108), a lid is chosen that will present the parasitics needed to provide the amount of frequency shift needed. As a last step (110), the chosen lid is attaching to the circuit board to obtain the desired nominal operating frequency from the voltage controlled oscillator.

Voltage controlled oscillator tuning by metal lid aperture selection

A voltage controlled oscillator (10) operable on two widely separated frequency bands of 800 MHz and 1.9 GHz, for example. The two operable frequency modes are controlled by changing base bias voltages on at least two transistors with commonly connected emitters. A base circuit of each transistor is connected to an independent resonator and tuning element and shares a common feedback reactance. By increasing a base bias voltage of first transistor relative the a second transistor, an associated first base circuit is turned on and allowed to oscillate at a first frequency while a second base circuit is turned off preventing oscillation at a second frequency. Correspondingly, by decreasing the base bias voltage the first base circuit is turned off and the second base circuit is turned on. The transistors share a common collector connection and output providing either one of the two frequencies.

Dual frequency voltage controlled oscillator

A voltage controlled oscillator operable on two widely separated frequency bands, such as 900 MHz and 1.8 GHz for example. The voltage controlled oscillator includes two negative resistance generators (32, 34) which share a common tunable tank circuit (26) and a common impedance matched combiner circuit (28) which provides the RF output (36). The VCO uses only one varactor (30) to tune both frequency bands. Separate negative resistance generators (32, 34) are used to provide optimum frequency selectivity within each frequency band.

Attaching a substantially planar polarizable material to the pivotal post such that the polarizable material is substantially parallel to the substrate and when in motion, moves substantially parallel to the substrate. The polarizable material is set in motion by an excitation winding which provides a varying field.

A buffer (200) having output devices (101 and 102) exhibiting complementary symmetry and configured as voltage-followers in push pull is biased for class AB operation by a bias network including two substantially equal resistors (201 and 202) arranged and configured to substantially reduce noise attributable to the bias circuit.
