An electronic device for collecting and displaying measurement data includes a data interface, a processor and a transport interface. The data interface obtains measurement data. The processor is configured to generate portable graphical user interface (GUI) information indicating a visual format corresponding to at least one of the measurement data or the electronic device, and to associate the portable GUI information with the measurement data. The transport interface is configured to deliver the measurement data and the associated portable GUI information to a remote display, enabling the remote display to display the measurement data in accordance with the visual format indicated by the portable GUI information.

The agent resides within the test and measurement instrument and gathers the information when activated. The agent can communicate directly to an electronic laboratory notebook server or can store the information on a portable computer readable media (CRM). Measurement sensors are designed to provide metadata to data recording devices in an opportunistic manner to conserve bandwidth and/or power. In one embodiment, the metadata is communicated to the recording device during opportunistic periods, such as, for example, when actual data transmission can be skipped, or when battery level is high, or when there is enough bandwidth, i.e., other sensors are not using the full allocated bandwidth. In one embodiment, a plurality of sensors each only send a portion of their data such that all the portions taken together form the complete metadata. The front-end and back-end subsystems are coupled to and communicate through a measurement interface. A system and method is disclosed for managing bandwidth in a wireless probe measurement system that may include receiving an indicator at the wireless probe to begin taking measurements of one or more variables, measuring the one or more variables, calculating a set of statistical values at the wireless probe using the measured one or more variables, and transmitting the set of statistical values to a central station.

In packetized data communication, certain special data packets must be identified quickly without the variable overhead of processing through the data protocol stack. A common example of such packets is those used for triggering events: immediate action must be taken on their arrival. This disclosure concerns a method for identifying such packets through the use of the error checking codes which are usually included in packet transmission protocols. By adding appropriate bits to a special data packet before transmission, the error checking code can be forced to a specific, predetermined sequence which will be recognized by error checking hardware at a receiver. If the specific sequence is all ones (or all zeros), the recognition hardware can be simplified.

In a system which tracks sequence numbers, a sequence number base is kept in non-volatile storage. During normal operation, the value in non-volatile storage is not rewritten until it exceeds the base value in non-volatile storage plus a predetermined update constant. On startup, the sequence number is set to the value in non-volatile storage plus the predetermined update constant.
