A fastener is provided for inserting into a body tissue. The fastener has a head and an anchoring portion comprising a plurality of distally extending legs. Each leg terminates in an anchoring element configured to penetrate tissue and to cause a net lateral resistance force on the leg during penetration. The legs are configured and structured so that when the net lateral resistance force on the anchoring element exceeds a predetermined level, at least a portion of the leg is deflected laterally away from a pre-insertion configuration and so that when the net lateral force is subsequently reduced below the predetermined level, the at least a portion of the leg is biased back toward the pre-insertion configuration.

A biocompatible electronic device incorporating a point-of-use-activated microbattery, the biocompatible electronic device comprising: a housing; a sealed control electronics chamber formed within the housing; control electronics contained within the sealed control electronics chamber for controlling the operation of the biocompatible electronic device; a sealed electrode chamber formed within the housing; a plurality of electrodes contained within the sealed electrode chamber and connected to the control electronics; an access port formed within the housing for providing fluid access to the interior of the sealed electrode chamber; and a removable tab for selectively sealing the access port; such that, upon removal of the removable tab, a contacting fluid can contact the electrodes and act as an electrolyte for activating the microbattery, whereby to enable the microbattery to power the control electronics for the biocompatible electronic device.

A suture passer comprising: a handle; a first needle mounted to the handle; a retrieving loop selectively extendable out of, and selectively retractable into, the first needle; a second needle mounted to the handle, the second needle being configured to pass suture therethrough; a housing having first and second lumens extending therethrough for receiving the first and second needles therein, respectively; wherein the suture passer is configured so that the first and second needles have (i) a first distance therebetween at the location at which the first and second needles pass through the housing, and (ii) a second distance therebetween at a location remote from the housing, and further wherein the second distance is greater than the first distance.

A surgical device is provided, the device having a tubular outer body member with a handle at its proximal end and a flexible distal end segment extending from its distal end. The surgical device also has an operable end extending from the distal end of the flexible distal end segment. The device is configured for selectively causing the flexible end segment to bend to adopt a desired curvature and for selectively rotating the operable end relative to the flexible distal end segment about an axis of the flexible distal end segment.
