Disclosed is a free flowing aqueous composition comprising (a) at least one polyester consisting of the residues of 2,2,4,4-tetramethylcyclobutane-1,3-diol; 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl) dimethylolpropionic acid; and at least one polycarboxylic acid and/or a derivative thereof selected from the group consisting of 1,2-cyclohexanedicarboxylic, 1,3-cyclohexanedicarboxylic, 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic and adipic acid, wherein said polyester has an acid number in the range of 10 to 100 mg KOH/g, a hydroxyl number in the range of 20 to 120 mg KOH/g and a number average molecular weight of 500 to 5000; (b) at least one neutralizing agent; and (c) water. The composition is useful in aqueous coating compositions.

Polymers containing cyclobutanediol and 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)alkylcarboxylic acid

A stable emulsion having a fluid medium; a phase change material (PCM) comprising a straight, branched and/or cyclic aliphatic moiety having from 3 to 18 carbon atoms, polymers, and copolymers having residues of the straight, branched and/or cyclic aliphatic moiety; and a modified cyclodextrin having at least one functional moiety capable of forming a stable emulsion with the PCM in the fluid medium. The invention further includes a modified paint or surface coating having from 10 to 99 weight % of a base coating and from 1 to 90 weight % of the stable emulsion admixed therein.

Surface coating incorporating phase change material

A water-based latex of an acrylic-modified waterborne alkyd dispersion in water is described. The acrylic-modified waterborne alkyd is a hybrid resin prepared by the polymerization of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence of a waterborne alkyd having at least one pendant sulfonate functionality. The ethylenically unsaturated monomer may also be a latent oxidatively functional (LOF) acrylic monomer. Preparation of the latexes may be achieved by emulsion polymerization of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence of a waterborne alkyd having at least one pendant sulfonate functionality. Preparation of hybrid latexes which contain latent oxidative functional (LOF) acrylic monomers may also be achieved by emulsion polymerization of at least one LOF acrylic monomer in the presence of a waterborne alkyd having at least one pendant sulfonate functionality whereby the latent oxidative functionality of the acrylic polymer survives polymerization. Such acrylic-modified waterborne alkyds are useful in a variety of coating compositions.

Acrylic modified waterborne sulfonated alkyd dispersions

This invention provides the preparation of water-dispersible polyester/acrylic hybrids via a two-stage emulsion polymerization process. For example, methacrylic acid and/or 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate are copolymerized with styrene/acrylic monomers to yield a relatively hydrophilic and hydro-plasticized first stage. Subsequent additions of hydrophobic monomers to this first stage 'seed' results in an inversion of the latex such that the more hydrophilic first stage is at the particle surface. This results not only in improved stability of the resulting latex without the use of additional surfactants, as evidenced by the production of reduced amounts of coagulum, while it also offers relatively low minimum filming temperatures due to the hydroplasticization of the shell of the particle. Furthermore, the use of the water-dispersible polyester results in extremely fine latex particle sizes which can significantly enhance coating properties such as film gloss and clarity.

Small particle size polyester/acrylic hybrid latexes

A water-based ink composition is described. The ink composition contains a pigment and a polymer latex. The polymer latex may be a polymeric (polyamino) enamine latex or a mixture of a polymeric (polyamino) enamine latex and an acetoacetoxy-functional polymer latex. The inks are particularly useful as laminating and surface-printing inks. Methods of printing are also described.
