A wearable electronic device (WED) worn on a head of a user displays a virtual image that has sound. One or more processors process the sound for the virtual image into binaural sound for the user. The binaural sound has a sound localization point (SLP) with a coordinate location that occurs behind the virtual image while the image is located a near-field distance from the head of the user.

An electronic device includes a display and one or more processors. The display displays, when a person is at a location, a virtual image at a sound localization point (SLP) in empty space. The one or more processors process sound with a room impulse response (RIR) for the location in order to generate binaural sound that externally localizes at the SLP in empty space in response to the person being at the location.

A method provides binaural sound to a person through electronic earphones. The binaural sound localizes to a sound localization point (SLP) in empty space that is away from but proximate to the person. The one or more processors process a first segment or channel of the sound with first HRTFs so the first segment or channel externally localizes in front of and to a right of a head of the user and process a second segment or channel of the sound with second HRTFs so the second segment or channel externally localizes in front of and to a left of the head of the user.
