An apparatus for detecting deformation of an elongate body may comprise a light source configured to sequentially provide light of multiple frequencies, an optical receiver configured to receive light from the light source, and a filter disposed between the light source and the optical detector. The filter may comprise multiple segments, each of the segments configured to filter light at one of the frequencies so as to alter the amount of light incident on said optical receiver. A total amount of light detected by the optical receiver may change during the sequence so as to be indicative of deformation of the elongate body.

Low-complexity optical force sensor for a medical device

Described herein are apparatuses and methods that improve conductive communication between an external programmer and an implantable medical device (IMD) that is implanted within a patient. In an embodiment, an auxiliary apparatus of the present technology includes a first auxiliary skin electrode configured to attach to skin of a patient, a second auxiliary skin electrode configured to attach to skin of a patient, and an electrically conductive path extending between the first and second auxiliary skin electrodes and interrupted by a capacitor. The auxiliary apparatus is distinct from the external programmer and the IMD, and can beneficially be used to improve conductive communication therebetween without making any modifications to the external programmer, and without making any modifications to the IMD.

Apparatuses and methods that improve conductive communication between external programmers and implantable medical devices

The present disclosure provides systems and related methods for reducing noise and interference in communications between an external device and implantable medical devices. The external device comprises an isolated switching power supply that includes a transformer separating a non-isolated side from an isolated side of the power supply. The transformer includes a primary winding on the non-isolated side, the primary winding extending between a primary winding upper end and a primary winding lower end, and a secondary winding on the isolated side, the secondary winding extending between a secondary winding upper end and a secondary winding lower end. The power supply further includes a high-frequency switch configured to selectively connect and disconnect the primary winding lower end to a ground, wherein the primary winding is electrically coupled to a supply voltage at an intermediate point between the primary winding upper end and the primary winding lower end.

Systems and methods for reducing noise and interference in isolated switching power supplies

An implantable medical device (IMD) is configured to be implanted within a patient. The IMD may include a controller configured to adjust a communication frequency, a housing formed of an electrically common material, and an insulating cover coupled to the housing. The insulating cover may include one or both of at least one opening or at least one thinned area over portions of the housing. Multiple sub-electrodes are formed in the housing through the opening(s) or the thinned area(s).

Systems and methods for implantable medical device communication

A method of ablating a tissue site includes at least two stages. A first stage involves conducting bipolar ablation between a first pair of electrodes situated in an opposing arrangement on opposing sides of the tissue site to form a pair of opposing first stage ablation regions extending from respective sides of the tissue towards the center. A second stage involves conducting bipolar ablation between a second pair of electrodes situated in a diametrical arrangement with respect to the first stage ablation regions, which forms a second stage ablation region intermediate the pair of first stage ablation regions. The second stage completes the ablation through the entire depth of the tissue site. Since the overall process can accommodate incomplete ablation during the first stage, lower power, reduced ablation times or both may be used during the first stage, avoiding overheating and with a decrease in ablated tissue volume.

Method and apparatus for radiofrequency ablation with increased depth and/or decreased volume of ablated tissue

In accordance with an embodiment, apparatuses and methods are provided for coordinating operation between leadless pacemakers (LPs) located in different chambers of the heart. A method includes configuring a local LP to receive communications from a remote LP through conductive communication over first and second channels, maintaining the first channel active for at least a portion of a time when the second channel is inactive to listen for event messages from the remote LP, detecting an incoming signal at the local LP over the first channel, determining whether the incoming signal received over the first channel corresponds to an LP wakeup notice, when the incoming signal corresponds to the LP wakeup notice, activating the second channel at the local LP, and receiving an event message over the second channel from the remote LP.

System and method for low power communication between implantable devices

Systems and methods for providing communications between an external device and first and second leadless pacemakers (LPs) located in a heart are provided. A method includes receiving first and second event messages from the first and second LPs, the first and second event messages received at different points in time at the external device, determining the signal strengths of the first and second event messages, respectively, as received at the external device, adjusting first and second LP discrimination thresholds based on the received signal strengths of the first and second event messages, respectively, and utilizing the first and second LP discrimination thresholds to identify which of the first and second LP transmits subsequent event messages, in order for the external device to independently communicate with the first and second LPs.

Dual chamber leadless pacemaker programmer and method

A contact sensing assembly including a catheter including an electrode having a base portion mounted adjacent a head portion of the catheter body. A sensor is disposed adjacent the base portion for measuring compression or tensile forces applied to an electrode tip portion, and includes a predetermined sensitivity. The base and head portions include predetermined rigidity so that forces applied to the electrode tip portion are determinable as a function of the sensitivity and a sensor output. A contact sensing assembly also includes an electrode pipe operatively connected to the catheter body for movement and bending with the catheter body, and an electrode wire disposed in the electrode pipe and including insulation. A change in capacitance resulting from movement of the electrode wire toward the electrode pipe or contact of the electrode wire with the electrode pipe during bending of the catheter correlates to a force applied to the catheter.

System and method for measuring force and torque applied to a catheter electrode tip

A medical device comprising a cell including an ablation element and a carrier configured to receive at least a portion of said ablation element is disclosed. The medical device further comprises a tube enclosing the cell. At least a portion of the tube includes a membrane and the tube includes at least one hole proximate the ablation element for facilitating fluid flow. The medical device further comprises a fluid inlet for providing fluid to the interior of the tube. A method of using the medical device is also disclosed.

Apparatus and method for cooling and moving ablation elements

A system and method for using a common subchannel to assess operating characteristics of one of a plurality of transducers coupled to said subchannel is disclosed. The transducers are divided into subsets, with each subset is coupled to a subchannel. The system is configured to activate a selected transducer on the subchannel and the subchannel delivers operational information on the activated transducer. The present invention reduces the number of subchannels required to collect information on the plurality of transducers. The present invention permits a more compact ablation device to be constructed based on the invention's ability to reduce the total number of subchannels required to collect transducer information.
