High friction railroad car components with component friction modifying inserts which are configured to coat an engagement surface on a corresponding component on the railroad car to modify or control the friction between an engagement surface of the high friction railroad car component and the engagement surface of the corresponding component while allowing such components to engage each other. The initial movement of the high friction component with the friction modifying inserts causes transfer material of the friction modifying inserts to be spread over or coat a portion of the engagement surface of the corresponding component. This forms a lubrication layer which modifies or controls the friction between these components while these components are in engagement.

A railroad car side bearing including a cage, a cap, a lock out insert configured to be removably connected to the cage, and an elastomer element configured to mate with the lock out insert. The lock out insert includes a key that is dimensioned based on a diameter of an interior channel of the elastomer element. Different lock out inserts with different dimensioned keys for different elastomer elements enable a common cage and a common cap to be used with different elastomer elements with different interior channel dimensions, thus reducing the need to have different cages.

Railroad car side bearing

A constant contact side bearing assembly for a railcar includes a housing having a base, a pair of mounting apertures formed through a thickness of the base, a generally cylindrical housing wall upstanding on the base, a pair of diametrically opposed channels, a pair of diametrically opposed openings and a guide member disposed centrally on and upstanding from an inner surface of the base. A cap is disposed for reciprocal axial movement relative to the housing. An elastomeric spring is disposed within a generally closed chamber formed by a combination of the housing and the cap. A pair of air passages is provided for dissipating heat generated during operation of the constant contact side bearing assembly. Each air passage is defined by a pair of aligned openings formed through a wall portion of the cap. Each opening may be disposed within a pocket provided within the cap wall.

A low profile mounting assembly for use between a rail car side frame pedestal and the rail car roller bearing includes a shear pad and a bearing adapter. In one embodiment, the shear pad has relatively thin plates joined by an elastomeric layer. In another embodiment, the shear pad includes a projection extending downwardly from a plate to be received and retained by a recess defined in a top surface of the adapter. In another embodiment, a central cavity formed in a lower plate of the shear pad cooperates with the adapter top surface to distribute forces on the roller bearing. In another embodiment, an elastomeric projection of a shear pad plate bears against ridges on the adapter top surface to prevent disengagement.

A single-piece friction wedge for use in damping relative movement between a bolster and a side frame of a railroad car truck includes a generally horizontal bottom surface, a generally vertical front surface, and a back surface oriented at an acute primary angle with respect to the front surface. The back surface has first and second sloped surfaces which are angled toward each other. A damping system employing such a friction wedge includes a bolster pocket insert. The bolster pocket insert is configured to be at least partially received within a pocket of the bolster and has an inner face configured to engage the pocket of the bolster and an outer face configured to engage at least one of the first and second sloped surfaces of the back surface of the friction wedge.

A side bearing for use in a railroad car truck includes a cage, a resilient element within the cage, and a cap engaging an upper end of the resilient element. The cage has a bottom surface and an upturned sidewall, while the cap includes a top surface with a downturned sidewall. The downturned sidewall of the cap is at least partially received within the cage when the resilient element is in a partially compressed condition. The cap is fully received within the cage prior to the resilient element moving into a further compressed condition, such that the cage engages a car body wear plate to provide a solid stop that prevents further compression of the resilient element. One or both of the sidewalls includes wear-limiting contours that may include one or more raised pads.
