An internal heating arrangement for a centrifugal impeller for a gas turbine engine is provided having at least one heating passage extending through into the rotor for directing air bled from the rotor exit along the backface and forwardly through the impeller.

A rotor assembly for a gas turbine engine, having a rotor member with axially spaced-apart front and rear end portions. A thermal shield is located axially downstream of the rear end portion of the rotor for thermally shielding the same from the hot surrounding environment. The thermal shield includes a rear coverplate and an axial gap between the rear coverplate and the rear end portion of the rotor member.

Low cycle fatigue life (LCF) impeller design concept

A turbine blade and assembly for use in a gas turbine engine are provided. The turbine blade has a root portion adapted for mounting to a rotor, and an airfoil portion extending from the root portion. A cooling air inlet duct is provided and adapted to communicate with the cooling air plenum when installed to the rotor. The air inlet duct has an inlet scoop portion adapted to extend into the cooling air plenum and an inlet scoop aperture oriented and adapted to capture cooling air from the cooling air plenum as a consequence of turbine rotation when the blade is mounted to the rotor. Scooped air is provided to a cooling air channel defined in an airfoil portion of the blade for the purpose of cooling the blade. The engine optionally includes a bearing gallery cooling air jacket in communication with the low pressure compressor stage for the purpose of cooling.

The invention relates to a radial split diffuser with an inner casing and an outer casing joined together along a cylindrical joint. Each diffuser passage is intersected by and extends transversely across the joint. The advantages of this design include: the elimination of a transition within the initial portion of the passages where air flow speeds are supersonic and minute surface discontinuities can significantly effect performance; and the simplification of manufacturing through use of metal castings to replace sheet metal fabrications in the manufacture of diffusers. The joint in the present invention can be located downstream from the diffuser inlet a sufficient distance in a lower velocity area. The joint is located to enable access for precise machining of the critical initial portion of the passages within the inner casing, and to minimize air flow disturbance in the initial portion.

Radial split diffuser

An integrated fan and low pressure compressor rotor having a hub with a circumferential array of primary blades. Each primary blade has a forward fan blade portion housed in the engine inlet radially extending from the hub to the fan case and a rearward compressor blade portion housed in the core duct radially extending from the hub to the intermediate case. The fan blade portion and compressor blade portion have aerodynamically aligned lateral airfoil surfaces and platforms such that the fan blade portion and compressor blade portion have continuously merged lateral airfoil surfaces and platforms. The integrated rotor replaces two conventional rotors resulting in cost savings.

The fuel efficiency of a gas turbine engine is enhanced by preheating compressed air before combustion by passing the compressed air through a heat exchange recuperator in thermal contact with hot exhaust gases. An integral recuperator/heat exchanger is defined by multiple diffuser pipes routed from a centrifugal compressor to extend radially across the hot gas duct through the inner and outer duct walls. As a result, a recuperative heat exchange air passage is defined by the compressor, diffusers, combustion chamber and hot gas duct, where the recuperative heat exchange air flow passage consists of a minimal simple single loop. Since many engines currently use a pipe diffuser, there is very little increase in air flow resistance by merely re-routing the pipe diffuser to cross the exhaust duct. In contrast, conventional heat exchange recuperators include structures which dramatically increase internal air flow resistance, engine weight and frontal area due to the relatively bulky and numerous convoluting ducts usually included.

Recuperator for gas turbine engine

A pressurized bearing assembly for turbomachines like gas turbine engines wherein pressurized oil is used to apply an axial force to the outer bearing race of a ball bearing assembly. The force is transmitted through the race to the ball bearings and to the inner race of the bearing assembly, and is further transmitted, via the engine shaft, to the bearings of another, axially spaced apart bearing assembly. The force moves the balls in both assemblies into line-on-line running contact with their respective bearing races, and minimizes vibration in the assemblies.
