A vehicle engine start/stop control method includes shifting an automatic transmission to a park or neutral position and auto-stopping the engine in response the automatic transmission being in the park or neutral position for a predetermined period of time that begins with a shift of the automatic transmission to the park or neutral position.

Vehicle and start/stop method for a vehicle engine

A vehicle includes an engine and a controller programmed to autostop and autostart the engine. The controller is further programmed to, in response to receiving signals indicative of a driver exiting the vehicle while the engine is auto stopped, autostart the engine, and after expiration of a predetermined duration, autostop the engine and inhibit vehicle propulsion until an ignition cycle is initiated.

A method and system for controlling the fuel mass to be delivered to an individual cylinder of an internal combustion engine during engine transients caused by intake control device transitions. The method and system compensates for fuel transport dynamics and the actual fuel injected into the cylinder. A plurality of engine parameters are sensed, including cylinder air charge. An initial base desired fuel mass is determined based on the plurality of engine parameters. An initial transient fuel mass is also determined based on prior injection history which, in turn, is modified based on the transition of the intake control device for that cylinder. A desired injected fuel mass to be delivered to the cylinder is determined based on the initial base desired fuel mass and the initial transient fuel mass. These same calculations are then used to compensate for changes to the base desired fuel mass while the fuel injection is in progress, resulting in an updated desired injected fuel mass. Finally, the injection history for that cylinder is updated to account for the actual desired fuel mass delivered to the cylinder.

A method and system for determining future cylinder air-charge of an internal combustion engine having a throttle plate and an intake manifold includes a throttle position sensor for sensing a current position of the throttle plate. Control logic determines a future position of the throttle plate based on the sensed current position. Based on a model governing a change in pressure of the intake manifold and the future position of the throttle plate, the control logic then determines the future cylinder air charge.

Method and system for determining cylinder air charge for future engine events

Method of estimating the total charge to cylinders (123) of an internal combustion (105) engine where the total charge comprises the sum of the air charge and the EGR charge. The total charge is estimated by determining a linear total charge versus MAP reference function at selected engine speeds and at a preselected reference (stored) barometric pressure, reference (stored) engine coolant temperature, and reference (stored) manifold air charge temperature and determining a current barometric pressure value, a current engine coolant temperature value, and a current intake manifold air charge temperature. An intercept of the total charge versus MAP reference function with an total charge axis (e.g. Y-axis intercept) is adjusted for current barometric pressure different from the reference barometric pressure, and the slope of the total air charge versus MAP reference function is adjusted for current engine coolant temperature and current manifold air charge temperature different from the reference engine coolant temperature value and the reference manifold air charge temperature value. An adjusted total charge is determined by engine control logic based on the adjusted intercept and the adjusted slope of the function. An estimated EGR charge can be subtracted the adjusted total charge to estimate air mass flow rate entering the engine cylinders.

Method of estimating engine charge

A throttle position system for an internal combustion engine. Included is a method for filtering a throttle position sensor using a maximum allowable rate of change based on factors such as, for example, physical driver limits or physical electronic actuator limits, for rejecting noise spikes. The filtered signal retains the necessary lead for use in air/fuel ratio control while eliminating problems associated with large noise spikes. Fuel is supplied based on the filtered throttle position and measurements from either a mass air flow sensor or a manifold pressure sensor.

EGR system for an internal combustion engine comprises a stepper motor driven EGR valve (150) to control the rate of exhaust gas recirculation in the engine and an electronic controller (EEC 100) for determining a desired EGR percent mass flow rate as a function comprising a rotational speed value and an aircharge value of the engine, converting the EGR percent mass flow rate to an EGR mass flow rate value, adjusting the EGR mass flow rate value as a function of an exhaust gas temperature value and an absolute exhaust gas backpressure value using MAP values, determining a pressure ratio value across an EGR orifice (155) cooperating with the EGR valve, and determining a required number of motor steps as a function of the adjusted EGR mass flow rate value and the pressure ratio value to achieve the desired EGR percent mass flow rate.
