A scanning device includes: a motion sensor to detect motion imparted to the scanning device; a distance detector to determine a distance between the scanning device and a surface; an infrared detector to capture a temperature of the surface; an image sensor to capture an image of an indicia encoding data on the surface; and a processor configured to store the captured image and temperature, configured to operate the motion sensor to detect motion being imparted to the scanning device when in a low power state, and configured to transition the scanning device out of the low power state in response to such imparted motion by: operating the distance detector to determine the distance to the surface; and determining whether to operate the infrared detector to capture the temperature of the surface and whether to operate the image sensor to capture the image of the indicia, based on the distance.

A multi-function sound chamber for a handheld barcode reader may include the ability to (i) amplify or otherwise efficiently project an audible signal generated by a buzzer of the barcode reader to sound window(s), and (ii) provide stiffening support to a printed circuit board (PCB) on which an electromechanical switch is mounted that a trigger of the handheld barcode reader engages when activated by a user of the reader. The sound chamber may provide other functions, including isolating light between good/bad read signals and battery level status. Another function may include reducing electrostatic discharge (ESD) by providing a high-impedance seal around connecting screws. Another function may include retention of the PCB by providing a pocket with a compliant material to retain a top or other edge of the PCB. By having the sound chamber perform multiple functions, the barcode reader may be produced more efficiently and cost effectively.

Systems and methods for securing and charging a machine-readable symbol reader in a position that enables the machine-readable symbol reader to continue to capture machine readable codes. The machine-readable symbol reader is secured by a stand that includes a base, an arm, and a cradle. The cradle includes a housing that forms a cavity that is sized and shaped to securely receive a portion of the head of the machine-readable symbol reader. The cavity may further align the window on the secured machine-readable symbol reader with an aperture such that the machine-readable symbol reader can continue to capture visual representations of machine-readable symbols. The housing may include a primary inductive charging interface that aligns and inductively couples with a complementary secondary inductive charging interface located within the machine-readable symbol reader to provide power to the machine-readable symbol reader while the machine-readable symbol reader captures visual representations of machine-readable symbols.

Disclosed systems and methods for a data reader having an ESD shield with integrated optical characteristics to improve illumination features of the data reader. The data reader includes an illumination module configured to generate illumination, and an ESD shield having high ESD resistance for protecting electronic and other sensitive components of the data reader. The ESD shield further includes a reflective interior surface and a spatial filter, where the reflective surface and filter together are operable to provide a uniform distribution of illumination along the body of the data reader.
