A full-field microscopy method for detection of Brillouin-scattered light includes illuminating a two-dimensional plane in a sample with interrogating light having a first wavelength. Light emitted from the two-dimensional plane can be collected. The emitted light comprises Brillouin-scattered light resulting from interaction of the interrogating light with the sample. The Brillouin-scattered light can have a second wavelength shifted from the first wavelength. The collected light can be passed through a spectrally-selective assembly comprising a gas or vapor illuminated by pumping light. After the spectrally-selective assembly, the Brillouin-scattered light from multiple points in the two-dimensional plane in the sample can be simultaneously detected by an electro-optical sensor. In some embodiments, the spectrally-selective assembly can be altered by changing a wavelength or polarization of the pumping light to allow acquisition of a Brillouin spectrum.

Full-field Brillouin microscopy systems and methods

A system for noise-resistant quantum communication using hyperentanglement includes a quantum system that includes a plurality of qubits, a processor, and a memory. The memory includes instructions stored thereon, which, when executed by the processor, cause the quantum system to access a signal of a quantum system that includes a plurality of qubits and obtain hyperentanglement of the plurality of qubits via an entanglement source. The hyperentanglement of the plurality of qubits is in at least two dimensions, including a first dimension and a second dimension. The instructions, when executed, further cause the quantum system to transmit the hyperentangled plurality of qubits via a communication channel; perform a communication of the signal with the first dimension of the at least two dimensions; and filter results of the communicated signal based on the second dimension of the at least two dimensions.

Systems and methods for noise-resistant quantum communication using hyperentanglement

A converging thermal lens is transiently formed by directing a shaped pulsed light beam having at least a first wavelength to a thermo-optic material, whereby the thermo-optic material absorbs the light beam and experiences local heating in response thereto. The heating induces a refractive index profile in the thermo-optic material that temporarily forms the converging thermal lens. In some embodiments, the refractive index of the thermo-optic material has a negative temperature dependence, and the pulsed light beam is shaped to have an inverted light pattern with a maximum intensity in an outer region of the beam cross-section. Alternatively, in some embodiments, the refractive index of the thermo-optic material has a positive temperature dependence, and the pulsed light beam is shaped to have a radially-varying light pattern with a maximum intensity in a central region of the beam cross-section.

Converging thermal lenses, and optical systems, kits, and methods for formation and use thereof

A Brillouin modality can be supplemented by an auxiliary modality, such as an optical imaging modality or a spectroscopy modality. In some embodiments, the auxiliary modality can be used to guide the Brillouin measurement to a desired region of interest, so that acquisition times for the Brillouin measurement can be reduced as compared to interrogating the entire sample. The auxiliary modality may have an acquisition speed faster than that of the Brillouin modality. In some embodiment, the auxiliary modality determines a composition of materials within a voxel in the sample interrogated by the Brillouin modality. Using the information provided by the auxiliary modality, the Brillouin signatures corresponding to the materials within the voxel can be unmixed, thereby providing a more accurate measurement of the sample.

In a spectrometry setup where a first spectral component dominates a second spectral component having a different wavelength, diffraction of the first spectral component as it passes through the optical train of the spectrometer can produce spectral noise that obscures detection of the second spectral component. To reduce the spectral noise, the light from the spectrometer is subject to spatial filtering or interference such that effects of the first spectral component are removed, or at least reduced. The second spectral component can then be more readily detected by a detector after the spatial filtering or interference. In embodiments, the spatial filtering or interference may be provided by a filtering module, which may be installed in existing spectrometry setups or form part of a unitary spectrometry system.

Methods and devices for reducing spectral noise and spectrometry systems employing such devices

A multi-stage parallel spectroscopy system has a plurality of dispersion stages, with the output of one dispersion stage serving as input to the next dispersion stage. Each dispersion stage separates input radiation into respective spectral components along a respective dispersion axis. In embodiments, the dispersion axes for the dispersion stages are substantially parallel to each other. Thus, the disclosed systems may be considered single-axis parallel spectroscopy configurations, in contrast to cross-axis parallel spectroscopy configurations. An optical system disposed in an optical path between dispersion stages can spatially filter a set of wavelengths from the input to the next dispersion stage to increase spectral extinction without sacrificing throughput or parallel operation. In some embodiments, the same dispersive element provides the spectral separation for multiple dispersion stages, by way of a recirculating optical system that redirects the spectral output from the dispersive element back to its input.

Multi-stage parallel spectroscopy systems and methods

An optical system has an illumination optical assembly, a detection optical assembly, a wavefront shaping device, and a controller. The illumination optical assembly focuses interrogating optical radiation to a focal point on or in a sample. The interrogating optical radiation propagates to the focal point along a first optical axis. The detection optical assembly direct optical radiation emanating from the focal point to a detector. The emanating optical radiation propagates from the focal point along a second optical axis. The wavefront shaping device is disposed in an optical path of the interrogating optical radiation or in an optical path of the emanating optical radiation. The controller sets a configuration of the wavefront shaping device to correct for aberration. The first optical axis is at a non-zero angle with respect to the second optical axis.

Methods and arrangements to enhance optical signals within aberrated or scattering samples

A procedure is performed on at least one section of an ocular component. At least one first electro-magnetic radiation is provided to the section so as to interact with at least one acoustic wave in the ocular component. At least one second electro-magnetic radiation is produced based on the interaction. Multiple portions of the second electromagnetic radiation are received. Each portion was emitted from a different corresponding segment of the section. A visco-elastic modulus of the section is monitored based on the multiple portions during the procedure. Feedback is applied to the procedure based at least in part on the monitored visco-elastic modulus, including at least one of: (1) guiding a trajectory of an incision based on different respective monitored values of visco-elastic modulus for the segments, or (2) determining a number of incisions to be made based on different respective monitored values of visco-elastic modulus for the segments.

Performing a procedure based on monitored properties of biological tissues

The present invention relates to a method and system for analyzing mechanical signatures of a plurality of cells for metastatic detection. Specifically, a data set characterized by at least one metric (such as Brillouin frequency shift and/or Brillouin linewidth) representing a cell mechanical signature is acquired for the plurality of cells by using a label-free Brillouin spectroscopy. A merit function is calculated based on one or more statistical characteristics of the data set, such as sensitivity and specificity. Then, the plurality of cells can be classified to detect metastatic cells based on mechanical signatures provided by the data set and an optimal metric value delivering maximum to the merit function.

Analysis of single cell mechanical phenotyping for metastatic detection

The present invention relates to a method and system for a label-free cell analysis based on Brillouin light scattering techniques. Combined with microfluidic technologies according to the present invention, Brillouin spectroscopy constitutes a powerful tool to analyze physical properties of cells in a contactless non-disturbing manner. Specifically, subcellular mechanical information can be obtained by analyzing the Brillouin spectrum of a cell. Furthermore, a novel configuration of Brillouin spectroscopy is provided to enable simultaneous analysis of multiple points in a cell sample.

Cell classification based on mechanical signature of nucleus

Exemplary embodiments of methods, arrangements and systems for obtaining information about a sample can be provided. For example, in one exemplary embodiment, it is possible to receive a first electro-magnetic radiation from a sample which is based on a second electro-magnetic radiation forwarded to the sample. The first electro-magnetic radiation may have a first frequency and the second electro-magnetic radiation may have a second frequency which is different from the first frequency. The difference between the first and second frequencies can be based on an acoustic wave inside the sample related to at least one characteristic of the sample. Further, it is possible to receive at least a portion of the first electromagnetic radiation and separate it into a particular finite number (N) of frequency component radiations. In addition, it is possible to receive a particular energy of more than 1/N of energy of the third electro-magnetic radiation, and generate information associated with the sample. Certain exemplary embodiments of the present invention are capable of obtaining information associated with a sample, particularly its mechanical properties, non-contact using electromagnetic radiation.
