Techniques for recovering a virtual machine are disclosed. In one particular embodiment, the techniques may be realized as a method for recovering a virtual machine comprising the steps of selecting a first backup copy of a virtual machine in a first data store, selecting a second data store; enabling use of the virtual machine by reading from the first data store and writing to the second data store, selecting a second backup copy of the virtual machine, and migrating the virtual machine from the second backup copy to the second data store.

A computer-implemented method for facilitating fault-tolerant backup jobs may include (1) receiving, at a media server, a backup assignment from a master server, (2) detecting a communication failure that inhibits communication between the media server and the master server, (3) initiating a backup job at the media server based at least in part on the backup assignment received from the master server, (4) caching, due at least in part to the communication failure, a catalog of the backup job at the media server instead of forwarding the catalog of the backup job to the master server in real-time during the backup job, and then (5) transferring the catalog of the backup job to the master server upon determining that communication between the media server and the master server is no longer inhibited. Systems and methods for facilitating fault-tolerant backup jobs

A computer-implemented method for performing backups may include identifying a request to back up a client system. The computer-implemented method may also include identifying a plurality of backup servers available to the client system via a network. The computer-implemented method may further include pairing the client system with a backup server in the plurality of backup servers based on a measure of network proximity between the client system and the backup server. The computer-implemented method may additionally include performing the requested backup of the client system via the backup server as a result of the pairing. A method for maintaining applications may include: (1) receiving a request to recover a first application, (2) identifying a first production topology of the first application that identifies a set of resources upon which the application depends, (3) maintaining a template for transforming the first production topology of the first application into a first recovery topology for the first application, the template comprising information for mapping the first production topology to the first recovery topology, (4) applying the template to the first production topology at a first point in time to create the first recovery topology, and (5) recovering the first application to a first computing system using the first recovery topology. Systems and methods for managing applications

A system, method, and medium for performing data duplication from a first storage device to a second storage device at a block level. A backup application processes metadata prior to replicating the data to determine the best method for performing the duplication operation. Several images may be selected for duplication, and instead of copying the images one at a time, the backup application copies data from the first storage device to the second storage device block-by-block. The catalog metadata may be updated so that the backup application may be made aware of the new copy of data. The replicated data may be accessed for future restore operations such that individual files may be retrieved from the replicated data by the backup application.

Method and system of performing block level duplications of cataloged backup data

A method and apparatus comprising a replication appliance that is coupled to a backup media server. The media server communicates with the replication appliance via either an in-band communication or an out-of-band communication that informs the replication appliance of the completion of a backup within backup software. Upon receiving the notification of the event, the replication appliance will replicate the change data forming a replicated image of that data for storage either locally or remotely from the replication appliance. This replicated image may be used for archival purposes.

A method, system, and computer-readable storage medium are disclosed for sharing non-distributed, random-access storage resources among a plurality of computer systems. A first backup or restore operation may be initiated. In response to initiation of the first backup or restore operation, a volume of a random-access storage device may be automatically mounted at a first computer system. The random-access storage device may be coupled to the first computer system by a network, and the volume may store a non-distributed file system. The first backup or restore operation may be completed by transmitting a first set of data between the random-access storage device and the first computer system. In response to completion of the first backup or restore operation, the volume of the random-access storage device may be automatically unmounted at the first computer system.
