Disclosed are various embodiments that facilitate recording to a storage medium in a personal video recorder (PVR) system. In one embodiment, a transport stream is received. The transport stream is stored into a memory. An index table is generated that provides information for locating particular frames recorded in the memory.

When a TS is provided to a device not having the capability to perform the proper decoding of the TP/TS formatted command packet, that particular packet may be deemed as being unidentified (or unknown) adaptation field data. Alternatively, the packet may be identified as being corrupted data and/or irrelevant data.

An interrupt sensitive extract byte instruction scheme is presented herein. The interrupt sensitive extract by instruction extracts bytes from data, depending on the presence of an interrupt. The extract byte instruction extracts bytes from data in the absence of the interrupt and does not extract bytes in the presence of the interrupt. The interrupt can be triggered by a set of counters that count the number of extracted bytes. By loading the counters with a particular number, the interrupt can be generated when the particular number of data bytes is extracted.

A system and method for detecting PES headers is presented herein. PES headers are detected by a combination of hardware and firmware. Hardware logic is used to detect the PES start codes while multithreaded firmware us used to process the packet.

Presented herein is a scheme for processing multilayered packets. In one embodiment, an application engine aligns a lower level packet header with data objects in the multilayered packet. Additionally, the memory stores the objects of the multilayered packet, such that the objects start at the beginning of a data word. Remainder portions of data words can store 0's. Additionally, an object table stores records comprising object identifiers associated with particular objects, and the address where the particular object is stored.

A system, method, and apparatus for reducing the video decoder processing requirements for rewinding a HITS stream are presented herein. During rewind of a HITS stream, the video decoder builds a clean reference picture. The clean reference picture is built by decoding each of the P-pictures in the EP-EP segment. However, because the P-pictures are not displayed, the decoder does not decode the portion of the P-picture below the last intracoded slice. The decoder can build the clean reference picture without decoding the portions of the P-pictures below the last intracoded slice because the subsequent pictures do not use the said portions for prediction.
