A method for optimizing memory utilization in a gateway of a process control and automation system is provided. The method includes obtaining, for a selected intelligent electronic device (IED), a configured IED description (CID) file associated with the selected IED. The CID file is filtered to generate a filtered CID file. The filtered CID file is provided to the gateway, which is configured to use the filtered CID file to communicate with the selected IED.

Method and apparatus for optimizing memory utilization in gateway of process control and automation system

A method of configuring actual Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) into a substation automation system (SAS) of a power system that runs a substation process. An IED data repository stores IED information including a plurality of logical node classes (LNs), where each LN includes a plurality of data objects as LN type definitions that represent at least bay level functions including control and monitoring outputs from the primary devices or protecting the primary devices. Using an LN type generator, selection of LNs is performed from the plurality of LNs based on functions for implementing at least one single line diagram (selected LNs) that represents the SAS. From the selected LNs a pre-configured IED strategy is generated to represent at a first actual IED to control and automate the substation process in a format understood by the SAS. The pre-configured IED strategy is saved into the IED data repository.

Pre-configuration and integration of IEDs in substation automation systems

A method () of generating on-demand device templates for integrating a controller controllable (CC) device with a process controller in a processing plant. A device description for the CC device is obtained () including a list of device parameters, connection details for communications including assembly structures, and a mapping of the device parameters into the assembly structures or the device description. Using a device template generating algorithm a custom device template is generated () for the CC device (i) by modifying an existing device template to include at least one modification or (ii) from the device description.
