A method for continuous monitoring the presence of entrained catalyst in a regenerator flue gas stream of a fluidized catalytic cracking unit is provided. The method has the following steps: (a) passing the regenerator gas stream through a separation system to remove a portion of the catalyst fines and to create a cleaner regenerator gas stream; (b) collecting a sample portion of the cleaner regenerator gas stream and directing the sample portion of the cleaner regenerator gas stream through an inertial separating device to separate entrained catalyst from the sample portion of the cleaner regenerator gas stream; (c) collecting any separated catalyst from the inertial separating device; and (d) monitoring the efficiency of the separation system by analyzing at least the amount of the collected separated catalyst or the particle size of the collected separated catalyst. An apparatus for measuring the amount of potentially erosive catalyst fines in a regenerator flue gas stream in a fluidized catalytic cracking unit is also provided. The apparatus is a sampling probe for collecting a sample portion of the regenerator flue gas from a line through which the regenerator flue gas stream flows, and an inertial separating device located downstream of the sampling probe and in fluid communication therewith, for removing any entrained catalyst fines from the sample portion of the regenerator flue gas.

A process is provided for producing pyridine and/or alkylpyridine compounds comprising reacting a feedstream of ammonia and at least one C.sub.1-5 carbonyl reactant under conversion conditions and in the presence of a phosphorus-modified molecular sieve containing catalyst to produce a product stream having a pyridine and/or a pyridine based compound selected from alkylpyridines or polyalkylpyridines. The catalyst has improved attrition resistance without affecting catalyst activity or selectivity.

There is provided a catalyst comprising yttrium containing zeolite Y. The zeolite Y is essentially free of rare earth ions. There is also provided a method for making this catalyst. There is further provided a process for using this catalyst for cracking gas oils. It has been discovered that when yttrium is incorporated into this zeolite Y, and when this catalyst is used to crack gas oils, these results improved gasoline selectivity and reduced dry gas make.

A cyclone and process for fluidized catalytic cracking of heavy oils is disclosed. Gas and entrained solids are added around a clean gas outlet tube in a cyclone body. Solids and some gas are withdrawn via a solids outlet and discharged into a catch chamber. Some of the gas discharged with the solids into the catch chamber is returned to the interior of the cyclone body via an opening in the cyclone. Chaotic reflux of gas back into the cyclone via the solids outlet is eliminated. The device may be used as an FCC regenerator third stage separator or to improve other gas/solid separations.

Cracking catalysts

A process for preparing a zeolite containing catalyst which has improved attrition resistance, and causes improved octane with no appreciable change in dry gas and coke make when used during catalytic cracking processes is disclosed. The catalyst is prepared by modifying the zeolite with a phosphate containing solution. The zeolite preferably includes an REY large pore zeolite. Treatment of the zeolite is best accomplished in an aqueous solution, at a pH range from about 2 to about 6, containing a water soluble phosphate compound. The phosphate treatment of the zeolite is carried out by deagglomerating the zeolite in an aqueous mixture in the presence of an aqueous phosphate containing solution, such as an aqueous solution of ammonium monohydrogen phosphate. The aqueous mixture containing phosphate modified zeolite is then combined with matrix precursors to form a slurry. The slurry is preferably spray dried to form the catalyst having a diameter less than 200 microns. The novel catalyst is used in the catalytic cracking of hydrocarbons in an FCC, moving bed or other catalytic cracking apparatus. The catalyst can be used for treating resids in which the hydrocarbon feedstock has a higher average molecular weight, a lower API gravity and/or a higher metals content than gas oil.
