A, method and apparatus for wirelessly transmitting data to a plurality of terminals in each of a plurality of beams through a plurality of transmit feeds includes selecting, for each beam, two or more terminals among the plurality of terminals in the beam as a subgroup of terminals, on the basis of channel state information of the plurality of terminals; determining, for each beam, equivalent channel state information representing the subgroup of terminals in the beam on the basis of the channel state information of the terminals of at least one of the plural subgroups of terminals; and determining a set of weight coefficients that relate the plurality of transmit feeds to a plurality of signals that are intended for transmission in the plurality of beams on the basis of the equivalent channel state information representing the plural subgroups of terminals. Also disclosed is a method and apparatus for receiving data transmitted via wireless transmission to a plurality of beams through a plurality of transmit feeds and estimating a channel on the basis of the received data. The present disclosure is advantageously applicable to satellite communication systems.

Joint transmitter signal processing in multi-beam satellite systems

In the receiver of a multi-level signal transmission system an unreliability signalling is generated for a decided channel symbol whenever the value of the sample originating said symbol lies within value regions comprising each decision threshold. Unreliability signallings relevant to each code symbol are counted and the existence of an erasure is signalled to the decoder when the number of unreliable channel symbols exceeds a predetermined number. The number of erasures in a codeword is also counted and erasure correction is disabled in the decoder when such a number exceeds a predetermined value.

Decoding method and device with erasure detection for multilevel

A method is described for decoding messages coded as blocks consisting of a fixed number of symbols and affected by symbol substitutions, deletions and insertions, wherein for each received message having a length comprised within predetermined limits, a sequence of words (error frames) is generated which comprise all possible error combinations which can be corrected in the message. By using such error frames, a decoded word is generated for each frame, the probability that a decoded word actually is the transmitted word is calculated and the decoded word, whose probability value satisfies predetermined criteria, is emitted as a decoded message. A device for carrying out the method is also provided.
