A data transmission system that detects fiber faults receives a plurality of data packets carried on a plurality of Gigabit Ethernet links at a plurality of Gigabit Ethernet input/output ports. The system then multiplexes, on a bit by bit basis, the data packets onto an optical link. When the system detects a loss of signal in one of the Gigabit Ethernet links, a signal loss code insert is generated. The system then multiplexes the signal loss code insert with the data packets.

Propagation and detection of faults in a multiplexed communication system

A system for data transmission and communication receives a plurality of Gigabit Ethernet data packets from multiple Gigabit Ethernet links. The system bit multiplexes the data packets, on a bit by bit basis, together onto a fiber optic link. At the output of the fiber optic link, the bits are demultiplexed into data packets and transmitted onto multiple Gigabit Ethernet links. The high speed fiber optic link transmits the data at higher speed than is possible over each individual Gigabit Ethernet link.

Bit multiplexing of packet-based channels

An optoelectronic phase locked loop for clock recovery in high-speed optical time division multiplexed systems. The optoelectronic phase locked loop includes a balanced photodetector through which the polarity ambiguity in error signal is resolved and the cancellation of laser noise enabling clock recovery with low timing jitter. The optoelectronic phase locked loop also includes an electroabsorption modulator as a phase detector, a lowpass filter, a variable controlled oscillator, a power divider and an amplifer.

A method and apparatus for overcoming modal noise penalties associated with multi-mode fiber optic links operating at high data rates on the order of 10 Gb/s. The method involves restricting the center launch condition of optical signals into the multi-mode fiber while permitting loose tolerances between source and fiber.

High-speed multi mode fiber optic link

We have determined that unlike the most multimode silica fiber, multimode polymer fiber often exhibits a delay characteristic that has a broad low dispersion region where propagation delay of spatially restricted optical pulses remains relatively constant. This low dispersion region is centered around the center axis of the fiber core as a function of launch position. By directing a transmitted optical pulse to this region, we have determined that optical pulse dispersion can be significantly reduced without the need for using the prior art technique of using a single mode fiber spliced in series with the multimode fiber to reduce dispersion. A polymer fiber based optical transmission system using this arrangement exhibits relaxed alignment tolerances between the optical source and polymer fiber, while reducing dispersion and increasing bandwidth-length product.
