Optical modulators are described having a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and a pair of RF electrodes interfaced with the Mach-Zehnder interferometer in which the Mach-Zehnder interferometer comprises optical waveguides formed from semiconductor material. The optical modulator additionally comprises a plurality of phase shifters configured to interface with the plurality of interconnected optical waveguides such that at least one phase shifter of the plurality of phase shifters is interfaced with at least one optical waveguide of the plurality of interconnected optical waveguides. A phase shifter controller, including an energy source with a variable output controlled by the controller and a plurality of electrical connections connecting the energy source to each of the plurality of phase shifters, is also included. In various embodiments, the plurality of electrical connections are configured to provide approximately equal power to each of the phase shifting elements from the energy source.

Apparatus and methods are described herein for cleaving an optical element at a defined distance from a splice (or other reference point/feature) of the optical element within a desired precision and/or accuracy. In some embodiments, a method includes receiving an indication of a location of a feature in an intermediate optical assembly visible within an image of the intermediate optical assembly. The feature can be for example, a splice. A position of the intermediate optical assembly is translated relative to a cleave unit based on the indication. After translating, the intermediate optical assembly, the intermediate optical assembly is cleaved to form an optical assembly that has an end face at a location disposed at a non-zero distance from the location of the feature. In some embodiments, the location of the feature can be determined with an image recognition system.

In one embodiment the present invention includes a display system for displaying video. The display system includes a backlight layer and an LCD layer. The display system controls the backlight layer and the LCD layer to emulate a cathode ray tube response. This emulation may be accomplished by applying a gamma function to a gamma corrected input signal. In this manner, the effects resulting from the 'crushed blacks' phenomenon may be reduced.

A display including an image-generating panel and at least one contrast-enhancing panel, a cross BEF collimator between a backlight and one of the panels, and a polarization-preserving diffuser (e.g., holographic diffuser) between the panels. Typically, the contrast panel is upstream of the image panel, and a reflective polarizer is positioned between the cross BEF collimator or and contrast panel, with the reflective polarizer oriented relative to an initial polarizer of the contrast panel. Polarization of light transmitted by the reflective polarizer matches that transmitted by the initial polarizer. Collimated light propagating from the cross BEF collimator toward the contrast-enhancing panel is given a polarization bias by the reflective polarizer, which reflects incorrectly polarized light back toward the cross BEF collimator. Alternatively, the reflective polarizer may be positioned between the cross BEF collimator and the image-generating panel when the image-generating panel is upstream of the contrast-enhancing panel.

Methods and apparatus are provided for backlighting a dual modulation display device. Each type of light source comprises a multi-primary light source having two or more primary color light emitters having different primary color characteristics from corresponding primary color emitters of other types of light source. Methods may comprise receiving illumination target values for a plurality of locations on the front modulator corresponding to the plurality of light sources, each of the locations on the front modulator configured to be illuminated by two or more of the plurality of light sources, determining primary color drive values source based on the primary color characteristics for that primary color and the illumination target value for the location corresponding to that light source, and driving the primary color light emitters or each type of light source based on the primary color drive values.

Methods and apparatus for backlighting dual modulation display devices

Systems and methods are provided for displaying stereoscopic image data on a dual modulation display having a light source modulation layer and a display modulation layer. An extended cavity surface emitting laser has a first laser die with a first cavity and a first gain element and a second laser die with a second cavity and a second gain element. The first and second gain elements are in series to provide optical gain and optical feedback in an extended optical cavity configuration. The first and second gain elements provide optical gain and optical feedback in a common extended cavity with the first and second gain elements operating serially as a common extended cavity optical mode.

This disclosure concerns optoelectronic transceivers. In one example, a transceiver is implemented as an uncompensated architecture that is substantially compliant with the SFP MSA and is capable of effective operation at a data rate of about 8.5 Gb/s. The transceiver includes a TOSA, ROSA, a printed circuit board, an LDPA disposed on the printed circuit board and configured for communication with the TOSA and the ROSA. Finally, the transceiver includes SFP compliant optical and electrical connections.

This disclosure concerns transceivers that include CDR bypass functionality. In one example, a 10 G XFP transceiver module includes integrated CDR functionality for reducing jitter. The 10 G XFP transceiver module also implements CDR bypass functionality so that the CDR can be bypassed at rate less than about 10 Gb/s, such as the Fibre Channel 8.5 Gb/s rate for example.

Adaptive transmission of optical signals. A dynamically adaptive optical receiver can include a receive optical subassembly (ROSA). The ROSA can include an opto-electronic transducer configured to receive an incoming optical signal from an incoming optical transmission link, circuitry for evaluating one or more properties related to the incoming optical signal, logic for comparing the one or more properties of the incoming optical signal to stored information representing threshold values, and circuitry for controlling a transmission characteristic of an outgoing optical signal based on a result of the comparison.

Dynamically adaptive optical transceiver

An optical transceiver module having digital control of laser current peaking is disclosed. The optical transceiver module comprises a controller and integrated post-amplifier/laser driver, which are included on a printed circuit board disposed in the module. Transmitting and receiving optical sub-assemblies are also disposed in the module. A digital signal interface interconnects the controller with the integrated post-amplifier/laser driver. Digital control signals produced by the controller are transmitted via the digital signal interface to the integrated post-amplifier/laser driver, where they are converted to analog control signals. The analog control signals are forwarded to control components responsible for governing the electrical current supplied to the laser of the transmitting optical sub-assembly. The laser current is intermittently peaked by the control signal in order to hasten the transition from light to no-light emission, thereby improving laser response and performance.
