Hollow cylindrical dynamo-electric machine stator cores may be made by superimposing at least two strips of core material to produce a composite strip. One or more of the strips may be run through a pressure roller structure prior to super-positioning of the strips. The composite strip is coiled helically to produce the hollow cylindrical stator core. By pressure rolling at least one strip, the internal diameter of the stator core can be adjusted to reduce irregularities. By superimposing strips prior to coiling, thinner strips can be used without requiring the stator forming machine to operate longer or faster to produce stator cores of a given size. The pressure rolling aspects of the invention are also applicable to coiling apparatus that uses only a single strip. Stator cores may also be made by coaxially assembling and joining two coils with a hollow annular lamination disposed between the two axially spaced coils.

Apparatus for forming stator coils constituted by multi-lobed turns, for dynamo-electric machines, comprises a first circumferential series of forming elements located at equal distances from a central axis and equiangularly spaced from each other, and a second circumferential series of forming elements equiangularly located about the said central axis and intercalated between the forming elements of the first series. The forming elements of the second series are moveable radially relative to the said central axis between an outer position which is spaced from the central axis by a distance greater than the distance between the central axis and the forming elements of the first series, and an inner position which is spaced from the central axis by a distance less than the distance between the central axis and the elements of the first series. A copper wire is wound about the first circumferential series of forming elements to form a polygonal coil and the forming elements of the second series are moved radially inwardly against the sides of the polygonal coil so as to curve these sides towards the center of the coil. The forming elements of the first series are free to move radially towards the central axis as a result of the thrust exerted against the sides of the polygonal coil by the elements of the second series. Automatic operating devices are provided for clamping one end of the copper wire to one of the forming elements of the first series before the start of the winding operation and for cutting the copper wire at the end of the winding operation.

During the winding of each coil, and before the said step of inserting the end of the coil in the corresponding commutator slot, the end of the coil is temporarily held by ancillary gripper means which are moved axially from a spaced position to a position closer to the rotor at the moment at which the said bending operation is carried out.

A device for placing prewound coils into stator slots comprises an annular series of fingers housed in respective longitudinal grooves of the outer surface of a hollow cylindrical finger holder. The fingers project beyond one end of the holder for placement thereon of prewound coils. A stripper member axially movable through the stator is provided on its periphery with a series of longitudinal grooves in which the portion of each finger which projects beyond the holder is received. Some fingers, and preferably at least one or both fingers of each couple of adjacent fingers between which a prewound coil is interposed is slidably mounted both within said stripper member and within said holder.
