The invention provides a method for simulating a 3D sound environment in an audio system using an at least two-channel reproduction device, the method including generating first and second pseudo head-related transfer function (HRTF) data, first using at least one speaker and then using headphones; dividing the first and second frequency representation of the data or using a deconvolution operator on the time domain representation of the first and second data, or subtracting the cepstrum representation of the first and second data, and using the results of the division or subtraction to prepare filters having an impulse response operable to initiate natural sounds of a remote speaker for preparing at least two filters connectable to the system in the audio path from an audio source to sound reproduction devices to be used by a listener.

Method and system for simulating a 3D sound environment

The invention provides a system for optimization of three-dimensional audio listening having a media player and a multiplicity of speakers disposed within a listening space, the system including a portable sensor having a multiplicity of transducers strategically arranged about the sensor for receiving test signals from the speakers and for transmitting the signals to a processor connectable in the system for receiving multi-channel audio signals from the media player and for transmitting the multi-channel audio signals to the multiplicity of speakers, the processor including (a) means for initiating transmission of test signals to each of the speakers and for receiving the test signals from the speakers to be processed for determining the location of each of the speakers relative to a listening place within the space determined by the placement of the sensor; (b) means for manipulating each sound track of the multi-channel sound signals with respect to intensity, phase and/or equalization according to the relative location of each speaker in order to create virtual sound sources in desired positions, and (c) means for communicating between the sensor and the processor. The invention further provides a method for the optimization of three-dimensional audio listening using the above-described system.

A method for simulating an artificial sound environment including sending an ultrasound reference signal to a headphone assembly worn by a user having two ears, the headphone assembly audibly providing at least one audio signal to each of the ears, processing arrival times of the ultrasound reference signal at each ear, so as to measure a phase difference of the signal as perceived by one ear in contrast to the other ear, modulating at least two audio signals, at least one signal for each ear, in accordance with the phase difference, and sending the at least two audio signals via the headphone assembly to each of the ears.
