Indolylquinones are useful for the treatment and prevention of diabetes mellitus, and in particular, for the treatment or prevention of hyperglycemia in diabetic patients. Some of the indolylquinones are produced by fermentation of the novel fungus Pseudomassaria sp. ATCC 74411.

Indolylquinones as antidiabetic agents

Unguinol is a well-known metabolite of the fungi Aspergillus unguis and Aspergillus nidulans. Unguinol has been found to be an active growth permittant and promotant in animals, in particular, monogastric animals such as chickens. In addition, the fermentation broth also produced the additional known unguinol derivatives of folipastatin and 2-chloro unguinol as well as the novel 4-methyl derivative. All of these compounds are active animal growth permittants. Compositions containing such unguinol derivatives for use as growth permittants and promotants are also disclosed.

A method for inhibiting oxytocin activity by administering an oxytocin inhibiting amount of a penicillide compound having the formula ##STR1## and compositions for such use are described.

Oxytocin antagonists

Described is a new process for producing the macrolide immunosuppressant, FK-506 under fermentation conditions utilizing the microorganism, Streptomyces sp., (Merck Culture Collection No. MA 6858) ATCC No. 55098. The immunosuppressant is useful in preventing human host rejection of foreign organ transplants, e.g. bone marrow and heart transplants.
