The present invention generally relates to an injection molding apparatus, comprising a manifold including a plurality of manifold channels and a plurality of nozzles. Each of the nozzles defines a nozzle channel in fluid communication with one of the manifold channels and including a plurality of nozzle bodies coupled in tandem by a removable and secure connection. The nozzle bodies include at least a upstream nozzle body and a downstream nozzle body. The upstream nozzle body has an upstream end adjacent said manifold channel, and the downstream nozzle body has a downstream end adjacent a mold plate. A removable nozzle tip is retained in a downstream end of each downstream nozzle body. The nozzles also include a plurality of heaters, wherein at least one heater is embedded into each nozzle body.

A valve pin bushing for a hot runner includes a bushing body having a hole therethrough for receiving a valve pin and a rearward surface for contacting a back plate. A thermally insulative component is coupled to a forward surface of the bushing body. The thermally insulative component is made of a nonmetallic material having a thermal conductivity lower than that of the bushing body.

A method and apparatus for removing melt from a stagnation zone in a melt conduit extending from a melt source to a mold cavity is provided. The stagnation zone may be created by the presence of a valve pin in the melt conduit for controlling melt flow therethrough. The apparatus includes a stagnation zone cleaner that is moveable through the stagnation zone for urging melt out of the stagnation zone.

A nozzle for an injection molding apparatus includes a nozzle body having a first nozzle body segment, a second nozzle body segment and a third nozzle body segment. The second nozzle body segment is removably connected to at least one of the first nozzle body segment and the third nozzle body segment. The first nozzle body segment and the third nozzle body segment are heated either by first and second nozzle heaters, respectively, or by a heater sleeve having a cut-out along the length of the second nozzle body segment. The second nozzle body segment is substantially devoid of a nozzle heater such that the second nozzle body segment is heated passively through contact with the first nozzle body segment and the third nozzle body segment.

A method and apparatus for rotating a cross-sectional asymmetrical condition of a laminar flowing material is provided in a hot runner system for supplying a laminar flowing material. The hot runner system has (i) an upstream melt passage, (ii) a pair of intermediary melt passages downstream from the upstream melt passage, and (iii) for at least one intermediary melt passage, an associated pair of downstream melt passages downstream from the at least one intermediary melt passage. The cross-sectional asymmetrical condition of a laminar flowing material is rotated by providing a bending path for orienting at least one path outlet relative to a path inlet to rotate the cross-sectional asymmetrical condition of the laminar flowing material such that the cross-sectional asymmetrical condition is substantially equally divided between the two downstream portions.

A nozzle for an injection molding apparatus is provided. The injection molding apparatus includes a manifold and a mold component. The manifold has at least one runner therein that is downstream from a melt source. The mold component defines at least one mold cavity and defining a gate into each mold cavity. The gate defines an axis. The mold component has a mold component alignment surface thereon. The nozzle includes a nozzle body, a tip, a tip surrounding piece and an alignment piece. The nozzle body defines a nozzle body melt passage, which is adapted to be in fluid communication and downstream from the at least one runner. The tip is removably connected to the nozzle body. The tip defines a tip melt passage therethrough. The tip melt passage is downstream from and in fluid communication with the nozzle body melt passage, and is upstream from and in fluid communication with the gate. The tip surrounding piece is removably connected with respect to the nozzle body. The alignment piece is positioned between the tip and the tip surrounding piece. The tip contacts the alignment piece to align the tip with respect to the alignment piece. The alignment piece contacts the tip surrounding piece to align the alignment piece with respect to the tip surrounding piece. The tip surrounding piece is adapted to contact the mold component to align the tip surrounding piece with respect to the gate, so that the tip is aligned with respect to the gate. The contact between the tip, the alignment piece, the tip surrounding piece and the mold component is adapted to be axially proximate the gate.

A locking mechanism for locking a valve pin of a nozzle of an injection molding apparatus in an extended position includes a generally oblong detent coupled to a pin. The pin extends through an aperture located at a first end of the detent to secure the detent to an inner wall of a recess, which is located adjacent the piston-receiving cavity of the valve pin. The detent is pivotable about the pin to rotate a second end of the detent into abutment with a return surface of the piston to restrict movement of the valve pin.
