Synthetic amino acid-modified polymers and methods of making the same and using the same are disclosed. The synthetic amino acid-modified polymers possess distinct thermosensitive, improved water-erosion resistant, and enhanced mechanical properties, and are suitable of reducing or preventing formation of postoperative tissue adhesions. Additionally, the amino acid-modified polymers can also be used as a vector to deliver pharmaceutically active agents.

Amino acid-modified polymer for adhesion prevention and application thereof

The present invention relates to a composition comprising an amino acid-modified polymer, a carboxypolysaccharide, and may further include a metal ion for anti-adhesion and vector application. More specifically, the invention relates to a thermosensitive composition having enhanced mechanical and improved water-erosion resistant properties for efficiently preventing tissue adhesions and can serve as a vector with bio-compatible, bio-degradable/absorbable, and in-vivo sustainable properties.

Temperature sensitive composition for tissue adhesion prevention and application thereof

A novel class of mixed micelles formed with critical micelle concentration (Cmc) character's diblock copolymer, and temperature-sensitive character's diblock copolymer were disclosed. The mixed micelles possess complementary effects in adjusting external temperature shift (storage vs. body temperature) and concentration change (dilution after intravenous injection). The mixed micelles of the present invention can serve as a potential injectable drug delivery system for anticancer drugs, such as doxorubicin and many others.

The present invention provides a lambda-shaped carbazole based chromophore, and a main-chain NLO polyurethane containing the same. The lambda-shaped structure reduces the plasticization to the main-chain polymers caused by the chromophore and increases temporal stability of the NLO coefficients of the main-chain NLO polyurethane. The NLO coefficients of the main-chain NLO polyurethane are stable because the efficiency of dipole alignment in electric field is increased due to the dipole thereof being perpendicular to the main chain of the polyurethane.

Lambda-shaped carbazole and main-chain NLO polyurethane containing the same

This invention is a heterobifunctional artificial cornea or biomedical membrane and novel process for preparing the heterobifunctional artificial cornea. In this method, plasma induced graft polymerization is adopted to provide the surface property modification of polymer materials like silicone or polyurethane. At first, the frontal side of the material is grafted with polyacrylic acid or polymethacrylic acid and then bonded with collagen, or 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) is grafted alone. A surface which increases the cell attachment and growth can be then developed. Another side of this membrane is grafted with acrylic acid or polymethacrylic acid and then different molecular weights of polyethylene oxide (PEO) is bonded thereto. 2-methacryloyl-oxyethyl phosphoryl chloride (2-MPC) is grafted to the membrane. The copolymer of the 2-methacryl-oyloxyethyl phosphoryl chloride and MPC-co-butyl methacrylate can be used in preparing a special surface which can inhibit the attachments of cells and protein molecules. Thus, a heterobi-functional biomedical membrane can be developed. In this work, the surface characterization of this membrane, in vitro study and animal in vivo study are also investigated. The obtained results exhibit a very good performance. Moreover, it demonstrates that the developed product has good transparency, hydrophilicity and high biocompatibility, thereby exhibiting the high potential in the application field of artificial cornea.

Liquid crystalline polymer having a polysiloxane backbone

An optically erasable read-and-write liquid crystal/side-chain liquid crystalline polymer composition, and method of making recordation on the same, are disclosed. The liquid crystal/side-chain liquid crystalline polymer composition of the present invention comprises: (1) from 45% to 85% of a nematic type ester-based liquid crystal and (2) from 15% to 55% of side-chain polymethylsiloxane liquid crystalline polymer having a molecular weight between about 4,000 to 10,000. The side-chain polymethylsiloxane polymer is prepared by graft-polymerization of a biphenyl derivative having a terminal saturated or unsaturated alkyl group, which can be either symmetrical or asymmetrical, with a polymethylsiloxane to form the liquid crystal side-chain polymethylsiloxane polymer of the present invention. Data are recordable on the recording medium of the present invention using a laser beam heating, and are erasable by applying an external electrical field.

The present invention relates to a method of synthesizing a bigraft compolymer based on grafted type peracid polymer, which comprises graft polymerizing a first ethylenically unsaturated monomer containing a carboxyl group onto a polymer substrate having a form of a membrane, particulate or tube; oxidizing the carboxyl groups of the resulting graft polymer into peracids; and then graft polymerizing a second ethylenically unsaturated monomer onto the grafted chain of the graft polymer through the decomposition of the peracid. Surface profile and morphology of the bigraft copolymer membrane product is also investigated by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy respectively.
