A spring retainer for a camshaft phaser is provided that includes an axially extending portion and a disk portion. The disk portion has an axially extending retention tab that is formed integrally therewith. The axially extending portion includes a torsional fixing region configured to torsionally attach a bias spring to the spring retainer. In a first installed position, the retention tab is spaced apart from a straight side of the bias spring. In a second rotationally slipped position, the retention tab is configured to be engaged with the straight side of the bias spring. The spring retainer can be utilized as a timing wheel that is configured to cooperate with a camshaft position sensor to provide an angular position of a camshaft.

A camshaft phaser includes a stator defining a cavity and configured to receive power from an engine crankshaft. The phaser further includes a rotor supported within the cavity and rotatable relative to the stator. The rotor has a first face, a second face, and a first hole extending from the first face to the second face. A target wheel of the phaser has a plate portion configured to be read by a camshaft-position sensor and a hub portion seated on the first face. The hub portion defines a second hole that is aligned with the first hole. A pin extends through the first and second holes to rotationally align and secure the target wheel to the rotor.

A camshaft phaser or camshaft adjuster for an internal combustion engine is disclosed. The camshaft adjuster includes a rotor, and a stator disposed about the rotor in a slideable engagement such that the stator and the rotor are rotatable relative to each other. A trigger wheel is configured to interact with an associated sensor for detection of an angular speed or position of the trigger wheel. A drive plate is configured to be non-rotatably fixed with an inner camshaft and rotatably coupled to the trigger wheel. In various embodiments, the trigger wheel has an axial face that defines an opening, and the drive plate has a tab with an axially-extending portion extending through the opening in the trigger wheel.
