The invention relates to a process for manufacturing a flat ribbon of precursor glass for a glass-ceramic, comprising the continuous floating of the molten glass on a bath of molten metal in a float chamber, said glass being poured in the molten state at a temperature above its devitrification onset temperature onto the molten metal upstream of the chamber, said glass progressively forming a ribbon that runs along said metal bath, the cooling rate of the glass being at least 18&#xb0; C./min between, on the one hand, the moment when the glass is at the theoretical temperature for which the devitrification rate is a maximum and, on the other hand, the later moment when the glass is at the theoretical temperature at which the devitrification crystal growth rate becomes less than 1 micron per minute. The glass thus floated does not undergo any devitrification.

An abrasive article having an abrasive body including abrasive grains contained within a bond material, wherein the abrasive grains comprise microcrystalline alumina, and wherein the bond material includes less than about 1.0 mol % phosphorous oxide (PO), and a ratio measured in mol % between a total content of sodium oxide (NaO) and a total content of potassium oxide (KO) defined by [KO/NaO] having a value greater than about 0.5.

A vitrified superabrasive product includes a superabrasive component and a vitrified bond component in which the superabrasive component is dispersed. The vitrified bond includes an oxide of a lanthanoid. Additionally, the vitrified bond component defines pores that can be essentially all less than 800 &#x3bc;m in diameter. Seventy percent of the pores are in a range of between about 40 &#x3bc;m and about 500 &#x3bc;m and have an average aspect ratio less than about 2. The porosity is in a range of between about 50% and about 90% of the total volume of the superabrasive product.

Vitrious bonded abbrasive

A vitrified superabrasive product includes a superabrasive component and a vitrified bond component in which the superabrasive component is dispersed, wherein the vitrified bond component defines pores occupying greater than about 50% of the total volume of the vitrified superabrasive product. The vitrified superabrasive product can be in the form of a grinding tool, such as a grinding wheel. A superabrasive mixture includes a glass powder, a superabrasive grit, a binder and a silicon carbide. The mixture can be in the form of a green body, which is fired under an atmosphere and pressure, and at a temperature sufficient to form a porous vitrified superabrasive product.

High porosity vitrified superabrasive products and method of preparation

An abrasive article including an abrasive body having abrasive grains made of microcrystalline alumina contained within a bond material, wherein the bond material comprises a total content of alumina of at least about 15 mol %.

A method of forming an abrasive article includes forming a mixture comprising a liquid carrier and a glass precursor material, wherein the glass precursor material comprises a material selected from the group of materials consisting of a hydrated metal compound, an organic silicate compound, or a combination thereof. The method further includes providing abrasive grains within the mixture, forming the mixture into a green ceramic body, and heating the green ceramic body to form a bonded abrasive article comprising the abrasive grains contained within a bond matrix, wherein the bond matrix comprises an amorphous phase formed from the glass precursor material.

Bonded abrasive articles and methods of forming

A fuel cell includes a ceramic component and a sealing component. The sealing component includes a first glass-ceramic layer over the ceramic component and a second glass-ceramic layer over the first glass-ceramic layer, each of the first and the second glass-ceramic layers independently including between about 0.5% and about 50% glass phase content by volume. The first glass-ceramic layer includes a higher glass phase content than the second glass-ceramic layer, and between about 0.5% and about 10% glass stabilizer component by weight.

Multilayer glass-ceramic seals for fuel cells

A bonded abrasive article is provided that includes abrasive grains within a bond matrix, the abrasive grains including cubic boron nitride (cBN) and the bond matrix including a polycrystalline ceramic phase. The bonded abrasive may have a Modulus of Rupture (MOR) of not less than about 40 MPa. Certain embodiments may have porosity, such as greater than about 5.0 vol %.

Bonded abrasive article and method of making

A bonded abrasive article is provided which includes abrasive grains made of cubic boron nitride within a bond matrix including a silicate. The bonded abrasive further includes a reaction product at the interface between the abrasive grains and bond matrix comprising a transition metal nitride.
