In one example, an optoelectronic module may include a stack assembly including an electrical integrated circuit and an optical integrated circuit electrically and mechanically coupled to one another, an interposer electrically and mechanically coupled to the stack assembly, and an optical connector to optically couple the optical integrated circuit with an array of optical fibers.

An optical receiver with improved dynamic range may include at least one directional coupler having at least one input configured to couple to an optical fiber. The optical receiver may include a first signal path including a first photodetector coupled to an output of the at least one directional coupler, a first transimpedance amplifier (TIA) including an input coupled to the first photodetector, and an adder coupled to an output of the first TIA. The optical receiver may include a second signal path including a second photodetector coupled to an output of the at least one directional coupler, a second TIA including an input coupled to the second photodetector, and the adder coupled to an output of the second TIA. Further, the optical receiver may include an optical power sensing circuit coupled to at least one of the first TIA, the second TIA, and the adder.

Split optical front end receivers

In an example, a photonic system includes a Si PIC with a Si substrate, a SiObox formed on the Si substrate, a first layer, and a second layer. The first layer is formed above the SiObox and includes a SiN waveguide with a coupler portion at a first end and a tapered end opposite the first end. The second layer is formed above the SiObox and vertically displaced above or below the first layer. The second layer includes a Si waveguide with a tapered end aligned in two orthogonal directions with the coupler portion of the SiN waveguide such that the tapered end of the Si waveguide overlaps in the two orthogonal directions and is parallel to the coupler portion of the SiN waveguide. The tapered end of the SiN waveguide is configured to be adiabatically coupled to a coupler portion of an interposer waveguide.

Two-stage adiabatically coupled photonic systems

Embodiments of a device and method to automatically acquire signal quality metrics in a digital communication system are disclosed. The device may include acquisition means to sample the likelihood of a digital communication signal passing through a grid of time and amplitude regions, and storage means by which such likelihood measurements may be accumulated in a computer memory array for analysis. A state machine may execute a method that controls both the acquisition means and the storage means, requiring minimal intervention from supervisory systems.

Light-weight on-chip signal monitor with integrated memory management and data collection

In an example, a coupled system includes a first waveguide, at least one second waveguide, and an interposer. The first waveguide has a silicon (Si) core having first refractive index n1 and a tapered end. The at least one second waveguide each has a silicon nitride (SiN) core having a second refractive index n2. The interposer includes a third waveguide having a third refractive index n3 and a coupler portion, where n1&#x3e;n2&#x3e;n3. The tapered end of the first waveguide is adiabatically coupled to a coupler portion of one of the at least one second waveguide. A tapered end of one of the at least one second waveguide is adiabatically coupled to the coupler portion of the third waveguide of the interposer. The third waveguide of the interposer has an optical mode size that is similar to the mode size of a standard single mode optical fiber.

A differential TWE MZM includes a differential driver, first and second capacitors, and first and second terminations. The differential driver includes a first differential output and a second differential output that collectively form a differential pair. The first differential output is DC coupled to a first arm optical phase shifter of a TWE MZM. The second differential output is DC coupled to a second arm optical phase shifter of the TWE MZM. The first capacitor AC couples the second differential output to the first arm optical phase shifter. The second capacitor AC couples the first differential output to the second arm optical phase shifter. The first and second terminations are coupled to, respectively, the first or second arm optical phase shifter.

Differential TWE MZM driver for silicon photonics

A differential TWE MZM includes a differential driver, first and second capacitors, and first and second terminations. The differential driver includes a first differential output and a second differential output that collectively form a differential pair. The first differential output is DC coupled to a cathode of a first arm optical phase shifter of a TWE MZM. The second differential output is DC coupled to a cathode of a second arm optical phase shifter of the TWE MZM. The first capacitor AC couples the second differential output to an anode of the first arm optical phase shifter. The second capacitor AC couples the first differential output to an anode of the second arm optical phase shifter. The first and second terminations are coupled to the cathode and the anode of, respectively, the first or second arm optical phase shifter.

In an example, a coupled system includes a first waveguide, at least one second waveguide, and an interposer. The first waveguide has a first refractive index n1 and a tapered end. The at least one second waveguide each has a second refractive index n2. The interposer includes a third waveguide having a third refractive index n3 and a coupler portion, where n1&#x3e;n2&#x3e;n3. The tapered end of the first waveguide is adiabatically coupled to a coupler portion of one of the at least one second waveguide. A tapered end of one of the at least one second waveguide is adiabatically coupled to the coupler portion of the third waveguide of the interposer. The coupled system is configured to adiabatically couple light between the first waveguide and the at least one second waveguide and between the at least one second waveguide and the third waveguide.

A linear transimpedance amplifier includes a forward transimpedance circuit that receives an input signal from an optical device. The forward transimpedance circuit generates a linear output signal. The forward transimpedance circuit includes a first gain path and a second gain path, the first gain path configured to amplify the input signal when the first gain path is at a lower input impedance relative to the second gain path and the second gain path configured to amplify the input signal when the second gain path is at a lower input impedance relative to the first gain path. A feedback circuit includes a first circuit that detects a low frequency component of the output signal. The feedback circuit further includes a second circuit that is driven by the low frequency component of the output signal and is connected with the forward transimpedance circuit such that the second circuit uses an average optical device current to at least partially control when the input signal is amplified by the first gain path and when the input signal is amplified by the second gain path.

Linear transimpedance amplifier with multiplexed gain stage

A transimpedance amplifier (TIA) with integrated filtering. A capacitance is integrated into the TIA and connected to the power supply and to an internal ground of the TIA. Noise on the power supply of the transimpedance amplifier is filtered by the capacitor such that the power supply noise is reduced. The integrated capacitor also reduces noise ground. The integrated capacitor also reduces the effects of common mode noise that may be received from another circuit.

Transimpedance amplifier with integrated filtering and reduced parasitic capacitance

An optical component, such as an optical receiver, is provided that includes a detector configured to receive a signal from an optical fiber and to communicate with a translationl module of the optical component. A transimpedance amplifier of the optical component is configured to receive an electrical signal from the detector and to transmit an amplified signal to the translation module. The transimpedance amplifier is configured for a controlled low cutoff frequency as optical power to the transimpedance amplifier increases, so that the optical sensitivity of the transimpedance amplifier is not traded for optical overload.

Optical receiver with wide dynamic range transimpedance amplifier

An optical component is provided that includes a detector configured to transmit an input current to a transimpedance amplifier that includes an automatic transimpedance gain control and DC cancellation control feedback circuit having variable impedance circuitry. Open loop gain of the feedback circuit is independent of the average input current as the input current increases. The feedback circuit includes first and second pnp transistors arranged so that their respective bases are connected and so that an emitter terminal of the first pnp transistor is connected to the input of the transimpedance amplifier, and the impedance seen at the emitter terminal changes according to the average value of the input current. The emitter size of the second pnp transistor is a factor N smaller than emitter size of the first pnp transistor. N can be selected to adjust the gain control and low corner frequency variation with input power.

A wide dynamic range transimpedance amplifier for fiber optics receivers. An automatic transimpedance gain control and DC cancellation control feedback circuit include a pnp transistor that is connected with the input signal. The impedance seen at the emitter of the pnp transistor changes according to the average value of the photodiode input current. Thus, large signal amplitudes are attenuated at the input of the transimpedance amplifier by the transistor and small signal amplitudes are amplified. The transistor is a variable impedance that can increase the optical overload without diminishing or reducing the optical sensitivity of the transimpedance amplifier.
