The invention relates to a method to reduce or prevent agglomeration of particles of halogenated rubbers in aqueous media by LCST compounds as well as highly pure halogenated rubbers. The invention further relates to halogenated elastomer products comprising the same or derived therefrom.

Highly pure halogenated rubbers

A copolymer has low levels of cyclic oligomeric compounds, which are undesirable impurities in certain applications. The cyclic oligomeric compounds are provided in an advantageously low ratio of C21/C13 oligomers. The C13 oligomers are extractable using steam to further reduce the total amount of cyclic oligomers. A process for producing the copolymer having low levels of cyclic oligomers involves contacting at least one isoolefin monomer with at least one multiolefin and/or &#x3b2;-pinene monomer in the presence of at least one Lewis acid and at least one initiator in a diluent. The diluent contains a hydrofluorinated olefin (HFO) comprising at least three carbon atoms and at least three fluorine atoms. Hydrofluorinated olefins used in the present invention are better diluents for butyl slurry cationic polymerization than saturated hydrofluorocarbons.

Copolymer having low cyclic oligomer content

Functionalized copolymers of isoolefins and conjugated diolefins, methods of preparing the copolymers, and their use as compatibilizers are disclosed. The diolefin monomer units of the co-polymer are modified at the C&#x2014;C double bond along the backbone of the copolymer to include an oxygen containing functional group such as epoxide, ester or alcohol. The functionalized copolymers improve the wettability of a non-hydrophilic surface towards hydrophilic polymer and allows for the formation of homogenous layers of the hydrophilic polymers. In particular, the spreading of a hydrophilic polymer on a non-hydrophilic substrate is facilitated by applying the co-polymers as an interfacial layer between the two incompatible materials. The resulting coated substrates exhibit resistance to protein adsorption and cell growth after grafting. The co-polymers are especially suited in the coating of biomedical devices where a high degree of uniformity of the coated surface is required.

Functionalized copolymers of isoolefins and diolefins and their use as compatibilizers

Methods are provided to efficiently produce butyl rubber via a slurry polymerization process. The process comprises providing at least two monomers, wherein at least one monomer is an isoolefin and at least one monomer is a multiolefin. The monomers are combined with an initiator and an organic diluent comprising 40-60 volume % of methyl chloride and 40-60 volume % of 1,1,1, 2-tetrafluoroethane and polymerized.

Diluent for the production of butyl rubber

A copolymer has high levels of multolefin incorporation. A process for producing the copolymer having high levels of multiolefin incorporation involves contacting at least one isoolefin monomer with at least one multiolefin and/or &#x3b2;-pinene monomer in the presence of at least one Lewis acid and at least one initiator in a diluent. The diluent contains a hydrofluor-Mated olefin (HFO) comprising at least three carbon atoms and at least three fluorine atoms. Hydrofluorinated olefins used in the present invention are better diluents for butyl slurry cationic polymerization than saturated hydro-fluorocarbons.

Copolymer having high multiolefin content

A copolymer has low levels of isoprenoid (short chain branching) structures. A process for producing the copolymer having low isoprenoid content involves contacting at least one isoolefin monomer with at least one multiolefin and/or &#x3b2;-pinene monomer in the presence of at least one Lewis acid and at least one initiator in a diluent. The diluent may contain a hydrofluorinated olefin (HFO) comprising at least three carbon atoms and at least three fluorine atoms. Hydrofluorinated olefins used in the present invention are better diluents for butyl slurry cationic polymerization than saturated hydrofluorocarbons. Blends of saturated hydrofluorocarbons (e.g. 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane) with an inert solvent (e.g. methyl chloride) may also be used as diluents.

Copolymer having low isoprenoid content

A process for producing a copolymer involves contacting at least one isoolefin monomer with at least one multiolefin and/or &#x3b2;-pinene monomer in the presence of at least one Lewis acid and at least one initiator in a diluent. The diluent contains a hydrofluorinated olefin (HFO) comprising a tetrafluorinated propene. Copolymers produced by a process of the present invention have a cyclic oligomer content lower than comparable polymers produced in a butyl rubber slurry process using 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane and/or methyl chloride as a diluent as well as a more favorable ratio of C21/C13. Hydrofluorinated olefins used in the present invention are better diluents for butyl slurry cationic polymerization than saturated hydro fluorocarbons.

Hydrofluorinated olefins (HFO's) as diluents for butyl rubber production

The present invention is directed to a method for preparing isobutene from a renewable source and their use in the preparation of renewable polymers. The invention also discloses purification of isobutene, selective removal of 1-butene, cis-2-butene and trans-2-butene using microporous adsorbent material, and the oligomerization of the purified liquid isobutene yielding diisobutenes and triisobutenes.

Polymers of isobutene from renewable sources

A process is provided for the removal of iron- and rhodium-containing residues from a solution of hydrogenated nitrile rubber. The process utilizes an ion-exchange resin having thiourea functional groups. Further, the resin is both macroporour and monodispersed. The process removes both rhodium and iron from viscous rubber solutions. In a preferred embodiment, the process is carried out in an ion-exchange column.

Process for removing iron-and rhodium-containing catalyst residues from hydrogenated nitrile rubber

A process is provided for the production of functional group containing resins wherein an alkyl-dithiol is added to the polymerizing mixture of styrene and divinyl benzene part way through the polymerization. On completion of the polymerization, the product is a thiol functionalized styrene-divinyl benzene resin.

This invention provides a new ion exchange resin which is characterized by having carbodithioate functionality (e.i. P--CS.sub.2.sup.- M.sup.+ where P--represents the resin bead and where M is selected from Na, K and Li). The present ion exchange resin may be prepared from a suitable non-functionalized resin bead by subjecting it to bromination, lithiation and treatment with carbon disulfide. Alternatively, a styrene-divinylbenzene resin which contains from 10 to 50 weight % DVB may be functionalized by lithiation and treatment with CS.sub.2. The carbodithioate functionalized resin of this invention is resistant to hydrolysis and is effective for the removal of Group VIII precious metals (e.g. rhodium) from chemical process streams.
