A bit for drilling a wellbore includes: a shank having a coupling formed at an upper end thereof; a body removably attached to a lower end of the shank and having a blade receptacle formed therethrough; a blade fixed to the body; a plurality of superhard cutters mounted along a leading edge of the fixed blade; a blade disposed in the blade receptacle and longitudinally movable relative to the body between an extended position and a retracted position; a plurality of superhard cutters mounted along a leading edge of the movable blade; and a spring disposed between the shank and the movable blade and biasing the movable blade toward the extended position.

A bit for drilling a wellbore includes: a body; and a cutting face forming a lower end of the bit. The cutting face includes: a blade protruding from the body and having a plurality of stud pockets formed in a bottom of the blade adjacent to a leading edge of the blade; a plurality of studs, each stud disposed in the respective pocket, mounted to the blade by a first braze material, and having a cutter pocket formed therein; a plurality of cutters, each cutter having a superhard cutting table attached to a cermet substrate, disposed in the respective cutter pocket, and mounted to the respective stud by a second braze material. An exposure of each cutter is greater than or equal to a diameter of the respective cutter.

The cutting face includes: a blade protruding from the body; a cutter including: a substrate mounted in a pocket formed in the blade; and a cutting table made from a superhard material, mounted to the substrate, and having a non-planar working face with a cutting feature; and a cutter orienting system including: a keyway formed in the substrate and angularly located opposite from the cutting feature; and a key formed in or mounted to the pocket and engaged with the keyway.

A bit for drilling with a casing or liner string includes: a tubular stem made from a high strength metal or alloy; a head: having a cutting face with an inner cone, an outer shoulder, and an intermediate nose between the cone and the shoulder; attached to an end of the stem; and made from a nonferrous metal or alloy; a plurality of blades formed integrally with the head, made from the nonferrous metal or alloy, and each extending from a center of the cutting face to the shoulder; a plurality of superhard cutters mounted along each blade; a plurality of gauge pads formed integrally with the stem; and a flush joint formed between each blade and a respective gauge pad. A yield strength of the high strength metal or alloy is at least twice a yield strength of the nonferrous metal or alloy.

A curved nozzle for use in a drill bit is disclosed. The curved nozzle includes a flow path that directs drilling fluid towards the face of cutters. The curved nozzle may include a base, neck, and a tip. Flow entering the nozzle, travels along a flow path through the nozzle and out the tip. The flow path may be reduced as it passes through the nozzle. The flow is curved as it flows through the neck and out the tip. The nozzle includes cooperating interior surfaces that guide the flow. The upper interior surface may include two curved zones. The first zone will be a substantially constant radius of curvature. The second zone, extending from the first zone, may be straight.

A drill bit includes a bit body having an end face for engaging a rock formation. The end face is defined by a HIP pressed center structure formed of a metal matrix impregnated with super abrasive particles. The HIP pressed center structure includes a central region located at a center axis of said drill bit and finger regions extending radially from the central region. The end face is further defined by infiltrated ribs formed of a metal matrix impregnated with super abrasive particles. Certain ones of the infiltrated ribs are configured to form radial extensions from the finger regions of the HIP pressed center structure.

A down hole casting assembly and a method for assembling the down hole casting assembly. The down hole casting assembly includes a mold and a blank coupled to the mold. The mold includes an internal surface surrounding a cavity formed therein and one or more junk slot displacements formed along at least a portion of the internal surface. The junk slot displacement includes a top edge. The blank includes an upper portion, a lower portion, and a bottom edge extending from at least a portion of the upper portion to at least a portion of the lower portion. At least a portion of the bottom edge is coupleable to at least a portion of the top edge. The portion of the bottom edge that couples to the portion of the top edge is complementary in shape so that the blank is positionable within the cavity in a repeatable manner.

Self positioning of the steel blank in the graphite mold

A down hole tool casting assembly, a gauge ring, and a method for preparing the gauge ring for use within the assembly. The gauge ring includes a bit diameter mold and one or more junk slot displacements extending inwardly from the interior surface of the bit diameter mold. The junk slot displacement includes a first end, a second end, and a junk slot displacement face extending from the first end to the second end. At least one groove is formed within the interior surface of the gauge ring, which alleviates stresses formed within the casting during the casting process. According to some embodiments, at least one groove is formed within the junk slot displacement face. According to some embodiments, at least one groove is formed within the interior surface of the bit diameter mold. Optionally, a pressure absorbing material is inserted into one or more grooves.

Compensation grooves to absorb dilatation during infiltration of a matrix drill bit

A self positioning cutter element and cutter pocket for use in a downhole tool having one or more cutting elements. The self positioning cutter element includes a substrate and a wear resistant layer coupled to the substrate. The cutter element includes a cutting surface, a coupling surface, and a longitudinal side surface forming the circumferential perimeter of the cutter element and extending from the cutting surface to the coupling surface. The cutter element has one or more indexes formed on at least a portion of the coupling surface. In some embodiments, the index also is formed on at least a portion of the longitudinal side surface. Hence, the coupling surface is not substantially planar. Additionally, at least a portion of the longitudinal side surface does not form a substantially uniform perimeter. The cutter pocket also is indexed to correspond and couple with the indexing of the cutter element.

Self positioning cutter and pocket

An apparatus and method for manufacturing a down hole tool that reduces manufacturing costs and enhances the tool's performance. A belted mold assembly includes a casting assembly, a belt assembly, and a mid-belt. The belted mold assembly is used to fabricate a casting that allows for a larger diameter blank to be used which displaces the more expensive casting material and for using a smaller outer diameter thin-walled mold. The casting assembly is disposed within the belt assembly and the mid-belt is loaded in the volume created between the casting assembly's outer surface and the belt assembly's inner surface. The mid-belt provides a bracing for the casting assembly during the casting process. Optionally, a cap can be disposed on top of the blank for preventing metallurgical bonds from forming between the binder material and the upper portion of the blank. This allows for the excess binder material to remain high in purity so that it can be reprocessed. The cap can be used with the belted mold assembly or with a casting assembly known in the prior art.
