A technique improves the formation of dependable seals along wellbores. A packer is constructed with a plurality of elastomeric layers and an internal mechanical layer that extend between mechanical extremities. One or more of a variety of features can be added to, or used in conjunction with, the packer to reduce wear and the potential for detrimental damage during use of the packer.

System and method for enhancing packer operation and longevity

A technique enables control over anti-extrusion layer movement during packer inflation. A packer employs a packer nipple having an exterior which uniquely engages distinct layers of the packer. The exterior comprises a plurality of distinct retention features, and each retention feature is designed to engage a specific layer of the packer. An individual retention feature can be uniquely designed to secure an anti-extrusion layer.

Anti-extrusion packer system

A technique enables construction of a simplified inflatable packer. An inflatable packer is constructed with a packer reinforcement layer having at least one fiber layer. The fiber layers provide both mechanical and anti-extrusion qualities in a relatively simple and small package. Depending on the desired application, the inflatable packer also comprises an inner bladder layer and other potential layers, such as an outer seal layer. Mechanical extremities are used to secure longitudinal ends of the various packer layers, including the packer reinforcement layer.

Fiber reinforced packer

A method of curing an inflatable packing is provided that includes providing a packer assembly having an inflatable packer around a mandrel; a polyamide bandage around the inflatable packer; and a sealing layer around both the polyamide bandage and the inflatable packer to from an airtight seal about the inflatable packer, wherein the method further includes curing the assembled packer assembly.

Method for curing an inflatable packer

A technique involves a packer formed as an expandable packer with an internal expandable bladder. The internal expandable bladder is surrounded with a plurality of packer slats oriented in a manner to enable expansion and contraction of the packer. Additional features are incorporated into the bladder and/or slats to facilitate repeated expansion and contraction of the packer while limiting leaks between wellbore regions and preventing extrusion of the bladder.

System and method for forming a seal in a wellbore

An integral bodied composite packer is constructed entirely of a composite material. It can include an expandable middle portion with an elastomeric cover to engage an exterior surface of a well bore. The expandable portion can include continuous strands of polymeric fibers to reinforce the body and prevent extrusion. The packer body can have longitudinal cuts or slats to provide rigidity of the body after expansion. The slats can overlap. The packer can include an elastomeric cover or layer therein to engage the well bore. The expandable portion can include a reinforcement member in a laminar portion of the body made from high strength alloys, fiber-reinforced polymers and/or elastomers, nanofiber, nanoparticle, and nanotube reinforced polymers and/or elastomers.
