A network element is herein disclosed. The network element comprises an embedded device having one or more property affecting a function of the embedded device and one or more status; a first computing system having a first processor and a first memory, the first memory being a first non-transitory computer-readable medium storing a device microservice and a hardware entity microservice, the hardware entity microservice in communication with the embedded device; a second computing system having a second processor and a second memory, the second memory being a second non-transitory computer-readable medium storing a core framework microservice; and a communication device in communication with the first computing system and the second computing system.

An optical device having a self-repair component capable of curing a defective component(s) is disclosed. To improve reliability as well as manufacturing yield, a photonic integrated circuit ('PIC') for as a multi-channel optical line terminal ('OLT') contains spare lasers or standby lasers configured to replace a failed laser(s). In one aspect, PIC includes a set of fixed-wavelength lasers (&#x201c;FWLs&#x201d;), a tunable-wavelength auxiliary laser (&#x201c;TWAL&#x201d;), a photonic detector, and a tuner. FWLs, for example, generate optical wavelengths representing optical signals. TWAL generates an optical signal with a spectrum of wavelengths based on a setting generated by the tuner. The photonic detector detects a defective wavelength. The tuner adjusts output wavelength of TWAL in response to the defective wavelength. Alternatively, PIC includes a working laser array, standby laser array, and spare laser array capable of providing two-layer laser defective protections.

Methods and apparatus for improving reliability of an optical device using auxiliary lasers in a photonic integrated circuit

An apparatus and method for managing and maintaining a network device are disclosed. A process performed by a router, for example, is able to generate configuration data in accordance with network configuration of the router and store the data in a memory. A converter generates human-readable representation of requested status in accordance with configuration data. For example, command line interface ('CLI') show output is generated by the converter for displaying system status. In one embodiment, a second converter is used to convert the configuration data to markup language configuration output such as extensible markup language ('XML') based CLI output. A script, in one aspect, is able to run test cases to verify network configuration in light of the markup language configuration output.

Optimizing testability of network devices using markup language based output

A process or method for embedding diagnostic information in a Simple Network Management Protocol ('SNMP') response during an occurrence of provisioning error is disclosed. A network element ('NE'), in one embodiment, is able to detect an operation failure while performing a GET or a SET request from a network manager. If the enhanced diagnostic code notification is registered between the NE and manager, the NE composes a response message such as GET-RESPONSE to include a standard error code as well as an enhanced diagnostic code. The enhanced diagnostic code includes diagnostic information associated with the operation failure. After transmitting the response to the network manager, the enhanced diagnostic code is subsequently decoded in accordance with enhanced diagnostic information stored in a network manager database.

Method and apparatus for embedding diagnostic information in a SNMP response for failure analysis

An apparatus and method for transferring information in bulk between network devices employing File Transfer Protocol ('FTP') are disclosed. During a network discovery process, an Element Management System ('EMS') initiates a file generation command formatted with Simple Network Management Protocol (&#x201c;SNMP&#x201d;) to one or more network element (&#x201c;NE&#x201d;). After obtaining configuration information from one or more network devices, an NE, in one embodiment, establishes a file containing the configuration information and subsequently stores the file in a storage location. The file formatted in SNMP format is forwarded to EMS suing FTP/SFTP (secure file transfer protocol)/TFTP (trivial file transport protocol).

Methods and apparatus for obtaining network information using file transfer

An apparatus and method for improving efficiency of data transfer utilizing packet resizing to optimize network management traffic are disclosed. After obtaining a maximum link capacity of a link which is capable of transmitting information, a process of dynamic packet resizing compares the maximum link capacity with a network management system ('NMS') maximum packet size. The outbound packet size of a network element ('NE') is set to the maximum link capacity if the maximum link capacity of the link is smaller than the NMS maximum packet size.

Methods and apparatus for optimizing network management traffic using dynamic SNMP packet resizing

Network recovery of multiple NEs, such as at NMS restart, or at re-establishment of communication after loss of communication with the NMS that provides reduced cost and reduced the elapsed time before the NMS can start performing network monitoring. A method of recovering data from a network element at a network management system comprises the steps of determining whether a data buffer of the network element is valid, if the data buffer of the network element is valid, determining whether the data buffer of the network element contains a database change event not received by the network management system, if the data buffer of the network element is not valid or if the data buffer of the network element contains a database change event not received by the network management system, indicating that the data buffer of the network element is out-of-sync with the network management system, and if the data buffer of the network element is valid and if the data buffer of the network element does not contains a database change event not received by the network management system, indicating that the data buffer of the network element is in sync with the network management system.

A network management system includes a network management server and one or more clients initiating network management messages between the server and network elements. The server parses the network management messages and communicates each message to client consoles having filtering criteria satisfied by the contents of the message.

A network management system program and graphical user interface for large-scale optical networks is described. The network management system includes a connection management system that allows a user to manually configure connections among network elements within the network. The user defines general connection attributes within the network and adds network elements to the route or routes. The user provisions crossconnects within each network element to establish the route connections. The connection management system includes a validation function to verify the validity of the user defined connections. A graphical user interface comprises a portion of a network management system that controls a network comprising a plurality of coupled computers. The graphical user interface includes a first user input area within a first display window allowing a user to specify a network address for a source node, a second user input area within the first display window allowing the user to specify a network address for a destination node, and a third user input area within a second display window allowing the user to graphically select a connection between the source node and one or more destination nodes in the network. The network management system program includes a first database storing the selected connection as a pending connection, a second database storing the selected connection as an active connection upon activation by the user, and a program module establishing a physical connection between the source and destination nodes upon activation by the user.

Connection management system and graphical user interface for large-scale optical networks

An architecture for distributing digital information to subscriber units wherein selection from among multiple digital services is accomplished by transmitting a tuning command from a subscriber unit to an intermediate interface. The intermediate interface selects the desired service from a broadband network and transmits it to the subscriber unit over a bandwidth-constrained access line. The bandwidth-constrained access line may be implemented with existing infrastructure, yet the subscriber unit may access a wide variety of digital information available on the broadband network. Universal broadband access is thus provided at low cost.

An architecture for distributing digital information to subscriber units wherein selection from among multiple digital services is accomplished by transmitting a tuning command from a subscriber unit to an intermediate interface. The intermediate interface selects the desired service from a broadband network and transmits it to the subscriber unit over a bandwidth-constrained access line. The bandwidth-constrained access line may be implemented with existing infrastructure, yet the subscriber unit may access a wide variety of digital information available on the broadband network. Universal broadband access is thus provided at low cost. Output bandwidth of broadcast equipment may also be optimized.
