A spot type brake having a disc or preferably ring brake member comprises a pair of brake pads on opposite sides of the brake member and a caliper with a hydraulic actuating unit for clamping the brake pads into engagement the brake member along a braking axis. The piston of the hydraulic actuating unit cooperates with a first brake pad and a bearing surface on the caliper cooperates with a second brake pad. The center or area of the bearing surface is circumferentially offset upstream or behind the braking axis relative to the direction of rotation of the brake member but the actuating unit is centered with respect to the first brake pad.

The invention relates to internal-external shoe drum brakes, or so-called 'crown' brakes in which the braking member is a drum or crown having braking surfaces formed on the annular inner and outer surfaces. The brake is provided with a calliper mounted on a fixed bracket, the calliper surrounding the crown and being adapted to apply brake shoes mounted on either side of the crown against the braking surfaces. The calliper is mounted on the fixed bracket for radial movement with respect to the crown and to this end is provided with at least one transverse lug formed with an aperture which slidably engages a guide pin mounted on the fixed bracket. The guide lug is formed separately from the calliper and is detachably secured thereto so that it can be released from the calliper when it is desired to change the brake shoes.

A brake is disclosed comprising an annular cylindrical braking member with brake shoes respectively on the inside and outside of the braking member which are straddled by a C-shaped caliper member. The caliper member is pivotally and slidably mounted by a composite mounting assembly comprised of a pivot pin and a tubular bracing member received snugly thereon. The pivot pin acts in tension between opposed leg portions of fixed support while the bracing member acts in compression. A sealing pad or cap is disposed at each of the ends of the passageway in the caliper member through which the mounting assembly extends for providing fluid tightness thereat.

A C-shaped caliper member straddles the hollow cylindrical braking member, a hydraulic actuator and brake shoes on the respective sides of the braking member. To axially retain the caliper member two circumferential, laterally projecting shoulders are provided on the end of the backing plate of at least one of the brake shoe remote from but facing the intermediate portion of the caliper member abutting against flats on the fixed support of the brake, an axial bearing surface extending from the opposite end of the backing plate, and an axial bearing surface on the caliper member or a part associated therewith axially beyond the first mentioned axially bearing surface, the axial bearing surfaces being cooperable with a removable retaining pin.
