A rotatable anvil for a rotary cutting unit, including an axle, at least one anvil portion adapted to co-operate with a knife member of a rotary cutter, a pair of load transmitting portions adapted to abut a pair of abutment members of the rotary cutter, the pair of load transmitting portions being arranged on each side of the anvil portion, and deflection means provided underneath at least one of the anvil portion and the load transmitting portions. The invention also relates to a rotary cutting unit including a rotary cutting drum and a rotatable anvil.

A rotary cutter for a rotary cutting apparatus. The rotary cutter includes a shaft and a mantle having at least one cutting member. The shaft is non-rotatable, and the mantle is rotatably mounted to the shaft and can be removed therefrom in an axial direction. The shaft is adapted to be rigidly mounted in a frame part, wherein the mantle is rotatably arranged relative to the shaft. The shaft may be in the form of a single piece, or a pair of axially spaced shaft portions.

An anvil drum for a rotary cutting apparatus having a rotary axis comprises an axle on each axial side of the anvil and concentric with the axis. Each of the axles is adapted to receive a bearing, and an anvil surface substantially concentric with the rotary axis. A reference portion is provided including an axial reference surface coaxial to the axis and a radial surface perpendicular to the axis. At least one connection device is provided for connecting a cover member on each axial side of the anvil so as to cover the bearing, respectively. An anvil assembly is further provided with such an anvil drum and the bearings, each cover member being provided with a blind opening adapted arranged coaxially with respect to the axis.

A rotary cutting unit includes a rotary cutter overlying a rotatable anvil. The anvil includes an axle, at least one anvil portion adapted to co-operate with a knife member of a rotary cutter, and a pair of load transmitting portions adapted to abut a pair of abutment members of the rotary cutter. The pair of load transmitting portions are arranged on each side of the anvil portion. A load receiving member is provided between each load transmitting portion and the anvil portion. Each of the load receiving members is connected to the axle via a bearing. Fluid cylinders apply upward forces to the load receiving members, wherein the total upward force exceeds the weight of the anvil.

A rotary cutter includes a hollow rotary mantle having a cutter arbor on an outer periphery thereof, through holes extending radially through the mantle, and an air distribution mechanism. The air distribution mechanism includes first and second parts. The first part is affixed to the mantle coaxially therein for rotation therewith. The second part is arranged inside the first part, wherein the first distribution part is rotatable relative to the second distribution part. The first and second air distribution parts define air passages for communicating selective ones of the through-holes of the mantle with an air source in response to relative rotation between the first and second distribution parts.

The invention concerns a new type of tool for engraving machines comprising an oblong body (11a) provided at one end of an insert-receiving (19) pocket (18). Said insert includes a cutting tip end (19a) at one end, one rear surface (23), as well as an intermediate surface in the shape of a cylindrical body (22) truncated by an oblique flat piece (24), the section of said cylindrical body (22) tapering away from said tip end (19). Said oblong body (11a) is provided with a pocket (18) including a cylidrical wall corresponding to that of the cylindrical body (22), as well as a wall slanted in such a way as to be adapted to the obliquity of the flat piece (24), the surface of said wall (25) exhibiting a convexity in a radial and/or longitudinal direction so that said insert (19) can be inserted and maintained in said oblong body (11a) by jamming the flat piece (24) in the pocket (18).
