A system and method are provided for controlling water temperature in a body of water. The temperature control system includes a processor, a user interface for receiving a desired temperature and a desired time for reaching the desired temperature, a sensor interface for receiving sensor information from one or more sensors, and an actuator interface for controlling a plurality of heat sources. The processor determines one or more optimal heat sources for heating the body of water to the desired temperature by the desired time. The processor controls the one or more optimal heat sources through the actuator interface and periodically polls the sensor interface to determine whether changes in the operating environment require additional or alternate heat sources to be activated to ensure that the body of water is heated to the desired temperature by the desired time.

Programmable temperature control system for pools and spas

The present disclosure relates to a programmable underwater lighting system for pools and spas. A plurality of underwater lights, each having a plurality of LEDs for producing light of various colors, a microprocessor for controlling the plurality of LEDs, and a memory in communication with the microprocessor containing one or more stored control programs, allow for the generation of various lighting effects in a pool or spa. A central controller is provided in communication with the plurality of underwater lights, and allows a user to define or select a desired lighting effect (such as a sequence, a fading effect, a 'moving' color pattern, etc.) using a display and a keyboard. Optionally, a handheld remote control could be provided, in wireless communication with the central controller, for allowing a user to remotely control the plurality of lighting fixtures. When a desired lighting effect is defined by a user, the central controller transmits an instruction to each of the plurality of underwater lights instructing each light to execute a specific stored control program in its memory to produce the desired lighting effect. Each of the lights could be in communication with the central controller using a power line and an associated power line carrier data protocol, and each light could be provided with a thermal management system for monitoring the operating temperature of the light and automatically adjusting the brightness of the light to prevent dangerous temperatures.

A sensor and a method are disclosed for the potentiometric determination of the ion content or activity of a sample and the concentration of other components (e.g., glucose, urea, triglycerides, enzymes, drugs) of a sample. The sensor comprises ion-selective electrodes which are held in a frame and have porous material between them; the porous material provides a means to establish ionic flow between the electrodes. Each ion-selective electrode is comprised of a membrane which is selectively permeable to the ion or other substance whose activity or concentration is being determined; a reference electrode; and an internal reference material.

A thermally responsive electrical control device is operable for producing a control signal having first and second voltage levels for controlling the operation of a system actuating device for first and second modes of operation. One embodiment of the device includes a multiple bridge circuit for sensing two temperatures and for making multiple control decisions in response to the two temperatures. Another embodiment of the device includes a thermistor and a nonlinear variable resistance element which is matched in a substantially linear relation with the thermistor for compensating for the inherent substantially nonlinear character of the thermistor. Still another embodiment of the device includes a monitoring circuit which is interconnected to a bridge circuit of the device for providing visual indications of sensed temperatures without significantly interrupting the control function of the device.
