Method for preparing ammoxidation catalysts

Mixed oxide vanadium/antimony/titanium ammoxidation catalysts, particularly suited for the ammoxidation of alkanes and exhibiting X-ray diffraction spectra which are characteristic of a crystallographic phase of rutile TiO.sub.2, are prepared by (a) dissolving respective soluble compounds of vanadium, of antimony and of titanium in at least one saturated alcohol, (b) contacting the alcoholic solution thus obtained with water and precipitating the mixed oxide therefrom, and (c) separating and calcining the mixed oxide thus precipitated.

The saturated hydrocarbons, typically alkanes having from 3 to 12 carbon atoms, e.g., propane, are selectively ammoxidized into .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated nitriles and olefins, e.g., acrylonitrile and propylene, by reacting such alkanes with ammonia and oxygen, in vapor phase and in the presence of a solid catalyst, such solid catalyst including a catalytically effective amount of an active catalytic phase which comprises molybdenum, oxygen and at least one element selected from among the alkaline earth metals, Mn, Fe, U, La, Co, Ni, Zn, Ag, Cd, W, Zr, Pb, Te, Ga, Al, B, Nb and Ta.

Ammoxidation of saturated hydrocarbons

Novel supported catalysts, well adapted for the catalytic conversion of exhaust gases emanating from internal combustion engines, include a porous carrier material, e.g., alumina spheres, such porous carrier material having a catalytically effective amount of at least one non-platinum group catalytically active element, e.g., cerium, essentially homogeneously concentrated throughout the depth of a defined peripheral face surface layer (outer band or ring) thereof.

The alkanes, e.g., propane, are selectively converted (ammoxidized) into admixtures comprising .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated nitriles, e.g., acrylonitrile, by reacting same with ammonia and oxygen, in vapor phase, and in the presence of a catalytically effective amount of a solid catalyst, the catalytically active phase of which comprising (1) molybdenum, vanadium and oxygen and (2) at least one of the elements, manganese, zinc, cobalt, copper, lithium, sodium, potassium and silver.

Thermally stable, sulfur-resistant catalysts for the conversion of exhaust gases from internal combustion engines includes an inert, rigid support substrate, e.g., a cellular monolith, coated with a layer of porouse material, the porous material containing alumina, at least one rare earth oxide, and a spinel type compound having a specific surface of at least 50 m.sup.2 /g, and the support substrate having an effective amount of a catalytically active phase impregnated onto the porous coating thereof.

Improvedly time-stable catalysts adopted for the treatment of internal combustion engine exhaust gases include a monolithic catalyst support impregnated with a plurality of catalytically active phases, one section of the support being impregnated with a first catalytically active phase and remaining section of the support being impregnated with a second catalytically active phase.
