A system and method of providing wireless communications to a wireless device is provided. A scanning report can be received from each of a plurality of wireless devices in communication with a first access node using a first radio access technology. A second access node can be selected from among one or more second access nodes to initiate communications with the first access node over a communication link based on the scanning report from each of the plurality of wireless devices. The plurality of wireless devices can be instructed to establish communications with the second access node using a second radio access technology different from the first radio access technology. A bandwidth allocation of the communication link can be adjusted based on the plurality of wireless devices.

Method of reducing active cellular connections in a wireless network

In systems and methods of determining the availability of a radio access technology, a first message is received from a wireless device in communication with an access node using a first radio access technology, wherein the first message comprises a request of the availability of a second radio access technology at the access node. Based on the first message, an identifier of the wireless device and an identifier of the first access node are determined. Based on the access node identifier, it is identified whether the second radio access technology is available at the access node, and a second message is sent to the wireless device instructing the wireless device to scan for the second radio access technology when it is available.

Determining the availability of a radio access technology

In systems and methods of frequency band selection for wireless device communication, a first frequency band comprising a first channel bandwidth is associated with a first application type and a second frequency band comprising a second channel bandwidth is associated with a second application type. When a request to establish a communication session is received at an access node from a wireless device, an application type associated with the request, a frequency band for the communication session with the wireless device based on the application type from among the first frequency band and the second frequency band, and the communication session is established between the access node and the wireless device using the selected frequency band.

Frequency band selection for wireless device communication

A method, system, and medium are provided for assigning wireless-network technologies to base stations within a base station cluster. A first set of base stations is associated to form a first base station cluster. Once associated into the base station cluster, the total estimated demand on each wireless-network technology is determined for each of the base stations in the cluster. The technology having the highest total estimated demand is also determined for each of the base stations in the cluster. A first RF channel in the cluster is assigned the technology for which the majority of the base stations in the cluster have the highest total estimated demand. This process is carried out for the remaining RF channels in the cluster.
