A data communication system includes a head-end modem, which is adapted to transmit downstream data signals over a communication medium in a first frequency band and to receive upstream data signals over the communication medium in a second frequency band, each of the first and second frequency bands including multiple frequency bins. At least first and second customer-premises modems are coupled in parallel to the head-end modem via the communication medium so as to receive the downstream data signals transmitted by the head-end modem in the first frequency band, and to transmit the upstream data signals in the second frequency band subject to multiplexing of the second frequency band between the first and second customer-premises modems.

Modem channel sharing based on frequency division

A bit loading for a channel of a multi-carrier data communication system is generated. The bit loading has a target bit rate and satisfies predetermined performance criteria. When the channel is loaded according to the bit loading, a minimal number of sub-channels of the channel are active.

Method for achieving a target bit rate in a multi-carrier data communication system

A method for communication includes modulating a stream of data in accordance with a voice-band modem specification, so as to generate a modulated signal. The modulated signal is up-shifted to generate a passband signal, which is transmitted over a telephone line simultaneously with a baseband voice signal.

Multi-band modem

A modem includes symbol converting unit and processing unit. The symbol converting unit converts between binary data and symbol data in accordance with a first constellation which is a transformed version of a standard constellation and the processing unit process the symbol data for transmission and produce symbol data from received signals. Alternatively, the symbol converting unit has at least two constellations to be selected.
