A cutting tool assembly having a tool body portion and at least one cutting portion, the at least one cutting portion having a tool clamping portion, an insert retaining member, a precisely located cutting insert and a securing member for ensuring that precise location of the cutting insert is maintained. The tool clamping portion has a tool base jaw and a tool clamping jaw. A slot extends generally rearwardly from a gullet to provide limited flexibility to the tool clamping jaw.

A cutting insert clamping mechanism for use in a cutting tool. The cutting tool has a body portion and a clamping portion. The clamping portion includes a base jaw and a clamping jaw. The clamping jaw has on its lower side a forward clamping surface separated by a recess from a rearward clamping surface. A first narrow bridge section connects the clamping jaw to the body portion of the cutting tool. A second narrow bridge section extends generally towards the rearward clamping surface. As a result of the two narrow bridge sections, the forward and rearward clamping surfaces can resiliently bend independently, and thereby are capable of applying independent clamping forces to the insert.

Resilient clamping mechanism for inserts

A cutting tool assembly comprises a tool shank having a shank holding portion and an exchangeable adaptor. The adaptor has an adaptor mounting portion to be secured to the shank holding portion with clamping means, and an insert retaining portion for retaining a replaceable cutting insert, the insert retaining portion projecting outwardly from the adaptor mounting portion. The adaptor mounting portion has a side wall formed with a protrusion which has a protrusion abutting surface substantially parallel to the side wall. The shank holding portion has a face surface generally parallel to the side wall of the adaptor mounting portion and formed with a recess mating with and capable of receiving the protrusion of the adaptor mounting portion. The clamping means comprises an adaptor through bore formed adjacent a rear end of the adaptor and passing through the protrusion, a threaded bore formed in the shank holding portion and aligned with the adaptor through bore, and a clamping screw. The rear end of the adaptor is formed with a transverse slit merging with the adaptor through bore, and at least a portion of the through bore, which is disposed in the protrusion, tapers in the direction towards the protrusion abutting surface of the adaptor mounting portion, the screw head portion being capable of bearing against the tapered portion of the through bore.

Cutting tool assembly having an exchangeable adaptor

A metal cutting tool assembly comprising a rigid holder blade, an insert receiving slot formed in a leading end of the holder blade and defined between a resiliently displaceable clamping jaw formed integrally with the holder blade and rigid base jaw forming part of the holder blade, spaced apart displacement and supporting surfaces respectively formed in or on the clamping jaw and the holder, and a slot opening key, a pair of spaced apart projecting prongs of the key with adapted to engage the surfaces. At least one of the prongs is displaceable with respect to the holder blade so as resiliently to displace the clamping jaw outwardly with respect to the base jaw into an opening position for insertion or removal of an insert.

Clamping device for a cutting insert

A cutting tool assembly comprising an elongated tool shank having, at a side adjacent a leading end thereof, a shank holding portion and an exchangeable adaptor having an insert retaining portion for retaining a replaceable cutting insert and an adaptor mounting portion releasably scoured to the shank holding portion by two clamping screws. The clamping screws are inserted into respective adaptor through bores formed in the adaptor mounting portion and threaded bores formed in the shank holding portion, the threaded bores being substantially aligned with the respective adaptor through bores. One of the adaptor mounting and shank holding portions is formed with a recess and the other one is formed with a protrusion mating with the recess and received therein, the bores passing through the recess and the protrusion and being oriented transversely to an axis of relative rotation of a workpiece with respect to the tool. The axes of the threaded bores are located substantially in a reference plane of the tool assembly which plane passes, during operation of the tool, through the axis of rotation. The axes of the through bores are slightly offset with respect to axes of the respective threaded bores so that they are disposed closer to the insert retaining portion than the axes of the threaded bores and, preferably, on different sides with respect to the reference plane of the tool assembly.
