The present invention relates to highly compatible hydroxyphenyltriazine UV-absorbers and to their use in protecting plants in green houses and the protection of foodstuffs, beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, personal care products, shampoos and the like from the deleterious effects of ultraviolet radiation. It has been found that certain highly compatible tris-aryl-s-triazines are especially effective towards this end when incorporated in the containers or films in which such materials are stored.

The present invention relates to highly compatible, high molecular weight hydroxyphenylbenzotriazole UV-absorbers and for their use in protecting plants in green houses and the protection of foodstuffs, beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, personal care products, shampoos and the like from the deleterious effects of ultraviolet radiation. A new process is described for the preparation of a compound of the formula I ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4, independently of each other, are C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 hydroxyalkyl, or R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 together with the carbon atom they are attached to are C.sub.5 -C.sub.2 cycloalkyl, or R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 together with the carbon atom they are attached to are C.sub.5 -C.sub.12 cycloalkyl; R.sub.5, R.sub.6, R.sub.7, R.sub.8 and R.sub.9, independently of each other, are H, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.8 alkenyl, C.sub.5 -C.sub.12 aryl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 haloalkyl, an electron withdrawing group, or C.sub.6 -C.sub.12 aryl which is substituted by a residue selected from C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy, halogen; and R.sub.7 and R.sub.8 together may also form a chemical bond; and R is an organic linking group containing 2-500 carbon atoms and forming, together with the carbon atoms it is directly connected to and the nitrogen atom, a substituted, 5-, 6 or 7-membered cyclic ring structure; characterized in that a compound of the formula II ##STR2## is oxidized. The compound of the formula I can be hydrogenated and/or halogenated by conventional methods. Compounds of the formula I and the corresponding hydrogenated and/or halogenated compounds are well suitable as stabilizers for organic material against degradation by light, oxygen and/or heat or yellowing; some are also active as flame retardants.

A compound of the formula (I) ##STR1## wherein n is an integer from 1 to 4; the radicals R.sub.1 are for example a group of the formula ##STR2## R.sub.3 is for example hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl or C.sub.5 -C.sub.12 cycloalkoxy; Z and R.sub.2 are for example a group ##STR3## the radicals A and E are, for example, independently of one another --N(R.sub.11)(R.sub.12) or a group of the formula ##STR4## R.sub.11 and R.sub.12 are for example C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl; R.sub.13 has for example one of the meanings given for R.sub.3 ; E* has for example one of the meanings given for A or is a group of the formula ##STR5## The compounds of the formula (I) are useful as light stabilizers, heat stabilizers and oxidation stabilizers for organic materials, in particular synthetic polymers such as polyolefins.
