Flexible polyurethane foams are characterized in having slow recovery times, low foam densities and very low compression sets. The foams are useful in human comfort applications such as pillows and mattresses.

Embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to polyurethane prepolymers, more particularly, to polyurethane formulations including a polyurethane prepolymer that can form polyurethanes. As an example, a polyurethane formulation can include a polyurethane prepolymer and a polyol composition including polyols, water, and a catalyst, where the polyurethane prepolymer is a reaction product of a monol and an excess amount of a polyisocyanate.

Thermal and acoustic insulation is provided to an appliance or a component thereof through a layer of a viscoelastic polyurethane foam. The selection of a viscoelastic foam of this density provides efficient thermal insulation as well as acoustic insulation.

Fiber-reinforced polyurethane structures are made with a polyol composition that contains a particulate filler such as calcium carbonate, in addition to the fibers. The polyol composition and the polyisocyanate composition are selected such that the polymer formed in their reaction has a calculated molecular weight between crosslinks (M) of from 300 to 420. The polyisocyanate component contains a urethane-modified MDI and/or a urethane-modified polymeric MDI.

Process for making long fiber-reinforced polyurethanes that contain particulate fillers

Polyurethane foams are made using a biuret-modified MDI and/or PMDI as the isocyanate component. The isocyanate is characterized by having a high content of biuret-containing oligomers and, preferably, a low proportion (if any) of biuret-urea oligomers. Flexible, resilient foams made using this biuret-modified isocyanate perform well on flammability tests such as the UNI 9175 CS. E. RF4 test, even without added flame retardants.
