Methyl acrylate alone or in mixture with acrylic acid is prepared by passing a gaseous stream containing methanol, acrolein and oxygen at a velocity of 5 to 50 cm/sec through a fluidized catalytic bed formed of spherical particles 15 to 100 .mu. in size, said particles comprising from 10 to 80 wt.% silica support, the remainder consisting of an active catalytic component defined by one of the general formulae:

Process for preparing methyl acrylate or mixtures thereof with acrylic

Methyl acrylate or a mixture of methyl acrylate with acrylic acid are prepared by passing through a fluidized bed of catalyst a gaseous mixture comprising acrolein, methanol and oxygen fed at the bottom of the catalytic bed. A further amount of methanol is fed at one intermediate point at least, between the top and bottom of the catalytic bed. The catalyst is defined by one of the general formulae:

Acrylic acid is prepared by contacting an oxidation catalyst with a gaseous mixture containing acrolein, oxygen and methanol. A proportion by volume from 0.05 to 0.5% methanol and a molar ratio of acrolein to methanol from 10:1 to 100:1 are maintained in the said mixture the catalyst is defined by one of the general formulae:

Method of preparing acrylic acid

An improved process for the production of acrolein from propylene and of acrylic acid from propylene or acrolein or mixtures of propylene and acrolein which essentially comprises catalytic oxidation of propylene and/or acrolein with oxygen or a gas containing molecular oxygen in the presence of an oxidation catalyst and of methanol in a quantity of from 0.01 to 1% by volume with respect to the total gaseous mixture of the reactants. Acrolein and acrylic acid are formed in the process at high conversion rates and selectivities.
