A carrier is extracted from a stream of optical signals including plural wavelength division, multiplexed carriers modulated by corresponding signals while a carrier having the same wavelength as the extracted carrier is inserted into the stream. The stream of optical signals and the carrier to be inserted are coupled to a tunable wavelength selector having first wavelength and phase shift properties. Tuning of the wavelength selector is changed, so it has second wavelength and phase shift properties such that the entire stream of optical signals is coupled from an input port to an output port via the tunable wavelength selector, and the extracting and inserting operation is not performed while the tuning is changed. The other carriers are coupled from the input port to the output port via the selector while extracting and inserting are performed, and the selector has the first wavelength and phase shift.

Tunable device for and method of extracting and inserting optical carriers in optical communications networks

A package for opto-electrical components, includes a casing having (1) a chamber and (2) at least one board or tile for carrying the opto-electrical components. The casing has an opening (shaped as a parallelogram) defining an optical feed-through path between the chamber and the outside of the casing. The casing includes ceramic material in the vicinity of the opening. An adapter associated with the opening has a substantially circular aperture to accept a fiber pigtail and/or a fiber optic connector.

A package for opto-electrical components includes a casing having a chamber for at least one board or tile adapted to carry the opto-electrical components. The casing includes a set of electrical connections including at least one radio-frequency differential line between the chamber and the casing exterior.

A package for opto-electrical components includes a casing having a chamber, and an optical feed-through between the chamber and the casing exterior. At least one board or tile adapted to carry opto-electrical components is in the chamber. The board or tile creates a solid mechanical structure with the casing while providing electrical ohmic connections with a set of electrical connections on the casing. The board or tile is from of an assortment of boards or tiles of different types.

The device, which has a modular structure, makes use of Bragg gratings for selecting, from a wavelength division multiplexed stream, a carrier to be inserted or extracted, and optical circulators for receiving the stream, for extracting and inserting the carriers and for sending the multiplexed stream to the output after the extraction and insertion of the carriers. The grating and the receiving-extracting circulator are located in a structural module which is replicated for all the channels to be extracted and inserted. Each module also has points accessible from the exterior for the connection of a plurality of modules in series, to establish the following for the multiplexed stream: A) a direct path between one input of the module and one input of the receiving and extracting circulator of the module to which it belongs, if this is the only module or is the last of a plurality of modules; B) a second path which passes through the receiving or extracting circulator and the selection means of the subsequent modules, where there is a plurality of modules, and for all the modules except the last.
