Steel reinforcing cords (36) having four or more filaments (38, 40, 42 and 44) in two groups, one twisted and the other untwisted with a filament tensile strength TS equal to K.sub.1 -K.sub.2 D where K.sub.1 =4080N/mm.sup.2, and D is a filament diameter in mm to form cords with a break load equal to N(720.40D.sup.2 -352.6D.sup.3 ; CE is the cord efficiency, D is the filament diameter in millimeters and N is the number of filaments.

High strength cord

Tires using high tensile reinforcement with values of at least 1240 N (280 lbs) for U+T type cord and at least 2000 N (450 lbs) for bunched type cord.

Tires with high strength reinforcement

An improved radial ply pneumatic passenger tire 30 having a conical shaped lower sidewall 21B in the unloaded uninflated and mounted state. The angular relationships relative the design rim flange 44 and the bead 33,533,63 permit the lower sidewall 21B of the tire 30 to rotate slightly upon mounting to the design rim 40, thereby improving the stiffness and handling characteristics of the tire 30.

Cord (36) reinforced composites 26 for tires (10) or the like having cords 36 in a diameter range of 0.30 mm to 1.6 mm with a cord break strength (CBL) of N(720.4D.sup.2 -352.6D.sup.3)CE.

High strength reinforcement

Metallic cord for reinforcing elastomeric articles and apparatus for making same including a round section and equal diameter filaments and a core (11) of two strands of two filaments (5,6,15,16) one strand being untwisted and the other strand having a twist and a first lay length so as to be twisted around the one strand. An outer layer (12) of filaments (21-28) twisted around the core (11) and having the same twist direction and a second lay length half of the core (11) lay length.

Open metallic cord for penetration by elastomer

A pneumatic tire having gum strips (19,21) for encapsulation of the cut edge of a cord reinforced ply (14), in particular a carcass ply. The gum strips are formed from an elastomeric compound having physical properties such that its 300% Modulus (ASTM D412) is comprised between 5 and 7 MPa and its Shore A Hardness (ASTM D1415) is comprised between 55 and 65. It has been found that such gum strips when used in the bead portion (11) of a tire to encapsulate the ply end (18), improve the durability of the tire.
